MLS Game Summary - Montreal at Philadelphia

(Saturday, March 29, 2014)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Montreal 1, Philadelphia 1

Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union were left to rue some late defensive miscues once again as the club was held to a 1-1 draw by the 10-man Montreal Impact at PPL Park on Saturday.

Philadelphia dropped points in its opening match of the season after conceding a late equalizer to the Portland Timbers, and it was a similar scenario in Saturday's affair as Marco Di Vaio struck 10 minutes from time to give the visitors a share of the spoils.

Vincent Nogueira had given the Union the lead in the 35th minute when he latched on to Jack McInerney's well-weighted through ball to slot a nice finish past Troy Perkins.

The Union appeared to be in control of the match and seemed certain to take maximum points after Andrew Wenger, who only entered the match at the hour mark, was issued a straight red card for a rash challenge in the 76th minute.

But the dismissal galvanized Montreal, and Di Vaio drew the Impact level four minutes later with an exquisite finish. The Italian collected the ball in a wide position but was afforded the time and space to drift into the penalty area. He made the Union pay for their slack defending by curling a superb effort past Zac MacMath and into the top corner.

The Union failed to notch a go-ahead goal in the dying minutes, leaving the club to settle for a draw that sees John Hackworth's men improve to five points through four games.

Montreal began its season on a three-game slide, but Saturday's result at PPL Park sees the Impact get their first point under new head coach Frank Klopas.
