Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Montreal Impact and Vancouver
Whitecaps FC played out a scoreless draw on Wednesday at BC Place in Major
League Soccer's return to action following its World Cup recess.
Vancouver returned to action riding a seven-match unbeaten streak in league
play, while the Impact were looking to bounce back from a 4-2 loss to D.C.
United back on June 11.
Montreal had the better of the play early on despite missing several key
players, as Maxim Tissot let a strike go from the top of the penalty area in
the fourth minute that took a deflection and forced Vancouver goalkeeper David
Ousted into a quick reaction save.
Darren Mattocks responded with a pair of opportunities in the 21st and 32nd
minutes, but on both occasions the strike failed to find the back of the net
as the sides went into the locker room on level terms.
Vancouver came out of the break with more energy and second-year forward
Kekuta Manneh had an early chance just seconds into the period as he ripped a
strike on goal that was expertly parried out of play for a corner kick by
Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
Montreal had a fantastic opportunity to break the deadlock in the 71st minute
as Jack McInerney got in behind the Vancouver defense and sent the ball back
to the edge of the box for Tissot, who ripped a strike on target with pace,
but it rattled the crossbar and stayed out.
The home-standing Whitecaps sent numbers forward in search of a winner as the
fourth official's board showed three minutes of stoppage time, but a decisive
tally could not be found and the clubs settled for a share of the spoils.
The result sees Montreal improve to 11 points on the season, while Vancouver
improves to 22 points.
