Feilhaber's late heroics lift Sporting past Crew

Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Benny Feilhaber scored at the death to hand Sporting Kansas City a 2-1 win over the Columbus Crew on Wednesday at Crew Stadium, extending Sporting's good run of form.

The visitors took the lead shortly before halftime through C.J. Sapong, but had Aurelien Collin sent off in the 55th minute. Columbus equalized in the 69th courtesy of an own goal from Sporting's Igor Juliao, but just when it looked like the teams would settle for a share of the spoils, Feilhaber popped up to hammer home the winning goal in stoppage time.

Sporting has now won four of its last five games, while the Crew's struggles continue as the team sees its winless streak reach seven matches.

Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark did well to keep out a header from Lawrence Olum early in the match, while Sapong saw his deflected shot go just wide.

But Sporting's first-half pressure paid off in the 42nd minute when Sapong turned home Feilhaber's corner kick for his first goal of the campaign.

The tide turned in the 55th when Collin received a straight red card for delivering an elbow to the face of the Crew's Adam Bedell, and Columbus needed only 14 minutes to level the match.

Chad Barson sent a cross to the front of goal from the right wing that was intended for Federico Higuain, but Juliao cut out the cross and nodded the ball into his own net.

Higuain went close with a half-volley from the top of the penalty area with nine minutes to play as the Crew searched for a winner.

However, Wil Trapp picked up a second yellow card in the 89th minute for the Crew, leaving both teams with 10 men.

And Sporting took advantage in the closing moments as Feilhaber ripped a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net from 20 yards, stunning the Crew and handing his side all three points.
