MLS Game Summary - Portland at Montreal

(Sunday, July 27, 2014)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Portland 3, Montreal 2

Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Diego Valeri's late second-half goal proved to be the difference on Sunday as the Portland Timbers earned a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Impact at a rain-soaked Stade Saputo.

Max Urruti and Will Johnson also netted goals for the Timbers, who have won two straight in league play following a 2-1 result over the Colorado Rapids last week.

Andres Romero and Maxim Tissot scored for the Impact, but Frank Klopas' team continues to struggle mightily as the setback was the club's fifth consecutive defeat in league play.

It was the hosts that struck first in the 13th minute as Justin Mapp got free down the right flank and played it across the face of goal for Romero, who touched it past his mark and ripped it into the top left corner.

But the Timbers drew level in the 36th minute when Darlington Nagbe slid the ball into the path of Urruti, who beat Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush to the near post for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Portland then grabbed its first lead of the night five minutes before the break as Montreal defender Hassoun Camara chopped down Valero in the box, resulting in a penalty kick, which Johnson buried for the 2-1 halftime lead.

The Impact drew level just four minutes later with some excellent attacking play as Patrice Bernier got down the left wing and laid it off to Tissot, who fired it home to the far post.

The winning tally came in the 82nd minute as substitute Rodney Wallace broke free down the left wing and flicked the ball into the box for Valeri, who sent a quick, bouncing strike past Bush to hand all three points to his side.

The result lifts Portland to 27 points, level with the Los Angeles Galaxy for sixth place in the West, while Montreal remains on the bottom of the East with 14 points.
