Dwyer lifts Sporting past United

Kansas City, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Dominic Dwyer's first-half goal proved to be the difference on Friday as Sporting Kansas City held on for a 1-0 victory over D.C. United at Sporting Park.

Having already clinched a postseason berth, SKC entered the match coming off a scoreless draw with the Houston Dynamo last week and had the better of the play right from the outset.

Sporting's high pressure, combined with a mistake from the youthful D.C. United side created the game's only goal just seven minutes in when United midfielder Perry Kitchen didn't get enough power on a back pass to goalkeeper Bill Hamid.

Dwyer, who has had his troubles with finishing this season, cut out the pass and fired it past an out-of-position Hamid for his second goal of the season.

United's best chance of the game came just a few minutes later when Jared Jeffrey was put through by a great ball from Chris Pontius. Jeffrey went in alone, but Sporting goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen came out to make the stop on the D.C. youngster.

D.C. United went for an injection of instant offense by bringing on Dwayne De Rosario in the 63rd minute, but the former league MVP was unable to produce an equalizer for his side, which has won just three matches this season.

Sporting, meanwhile, hops into the Supporters' Shield lead with the result on 55 points, and the club is guaranteed at least a top-three finish in the East.
