MLS Game Summary - New England at Philadelphia

(Saturday, March 15, 2014)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Philadelphia 1, New England 0

Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sebastien Le Toux's goal in the 31st minute was enough to hand the Philadelphia Union a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution on Saturday at PPL Park.

The Union was coming off of a 1-1 draw at Portland that saw the club give up a stoppage-time equalizer, but this time Le Toux's goal stood up to give the Union three points in their home opener.

New England suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at Houston last weekend, and head coach Jay Heaps was certainly looking for a response from his side.

Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth did well to keep his team on level terms in the 25th minute when a redirection from Jack McInerney from a few yards forced the netminder into a quick reaction stop.

But Shuttleworth was picking the ball out of his net five minutes later when Leo Fernandes collected a pass on the left wing and drove the ball to the front of goal where Le Toux applied the final touch.

The best chance for New England came before halftime when Teal Bunbury set up a glorious chance for Diego Fagundez. Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath scrambled across the net as Fagundez had him at his mercy from six yards, but the Revs forward shot the ball straight into the legs of MacMath, who wasn't seriously troubled over the final 45 minutes.
