10-man FC Dallas sneak past RSL
Frisco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Je-Vaughn Watson and Fabian Castillo netted second-half goals on Friday as 10-man FC Dallas earned an impressive 2-1 victory over Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake at Toyota Stadium.
Watson opened the scoring for the home side five minutes into the second half and Castillo added the insurance tally in the 74th minute to move FC Dallas onto 42 points.
The win extends FCD's league unbeaten streak to 10 matches and also lifts the club into a three-way tie for the top spot in the West with RSL and Seattle
Olmes Garcia netted a consolation goal for RSL late on, but Jeff Cassar's men were just a tad off the pace all night and the club suffered its fifth defeat of the campaign.
The hosts had the first quality chance of the night in the 29th minute when Andres Escobar weaved his way through several RSL defenders and got a strike away from the top of the box, but it flew past the left post.
Rookie Tesho Akindele had another opportunity for FCD just moments later as he got to the top of the box looking to put it around RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, but the U.S. international 'keeper parried the strike over the bar.
Things appeared to become more difficult for Dallas in first-half stoppage time when Blas Perez was shown a second yellow card and sent off for diving, reducing the home side to 10 men for the entire second half.
Despite playing a man down, FCD grabbed the lead in the 50th minute when Michel whipped a corner kick into the area that struck Watson in the chest and wound up past Rimando for the game's opening tally.
Dallas doubled its advantage 16 minutes from time when Castillo collected the ball just past midfield and ran at two RSL defenders. Castillo got to the top of the area and beat Rimando with an excellent strike into the bottom left corner for his ninth goal of the season.
The visitors pulled one back in stoppage time when Garcia got on the end of a cross from Sebastian Velasquez and directed it home, but it wasn't enough.
