Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jack McInerney scored on either side of the
intermission on Sunday, helping the Montreal Impact earn a comfortable 3-0
victory over Eastern Conference rivals Houston Dynamo at Stade Saputo.
McInerney netted in the 41st and 75th minutes, while veteran striker Marco Di
Vaio added a third tally four minutes later to help Montreal rebound from its
scoreless draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday.
Houston created very little in the way of scoring chances en route to its
fifth consecutive loss in league play. The Dynamo have not won since a May 17
1-0 result against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Houston's best opportunity came in the 30th minute as Omar Cummings did well
to control the ball off his chest, turn and rip a volley on goal with pace,
but it smashed the crossbar and stayed out.
The hosts struck first four minutes before the intermission when rookie
defender Eric Miller sent a cross into the box with pace and McInerney got his
head on it, directing the ball past Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall.
The Impact doubled their advantage 15 minutes from time. Justin Mapp got the
play started when he beat his mark to the end line and lofted the ball into
the penalty area. McInerney got a foot to it, looping the ball over the head
of Hall, off the post and in behind for his second goal of the match.
Montreal then put an exclamation point on a solid performance when Di Vaio
found himself in the right spot at the right time to tap home a rebound for
his second goal of the campaign.
The result sees Montreal earn its third win of the season and improve to 14
points from 15 matches.
