Union host 'Caps at PPL Park

Chester, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union will aim for a second consecutive victory on Saturday when the club hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC at PPL Park.

Philadelphia has struggled for the majority of the season, but put together its best 90-minute effort thus far following a comfortable 3-0 victory over Chivas USA at StubHub Center last weekend.

Conor Casey bagged a brace and Cristian Maidana claimed a third goal for the Union, who earned just their third victory of the season.

Casey got things going in the right direction for Philadelphia in the 28th minute when he fired home a penalty kick following a handball in the box. He added a second goal just minutes into the second half when he nodded home a cross from Maidana with a diving header.

Philadelphia put the result away 12 minutes from time when Maidana was allowed to gallop into the box unimpeded and he fired it past Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

"We were able to find ourselves in some good spots and although we didn't always pull off the play, we were trying to just get balls into the box which is important," Casey said

"We've played against some tough opponents this year and this [was] a game that we definitely wanted to win. Hopefully we'll be able to take the confidence from this week and use it to follow up with getting points at home."

Vancouver, meanwhile, comes into the match with supreme confidence after earning a thrilling 4-3 victory over Cascadia Cup rivals Portland Timbers at Providence Park last week.

Pedro Morales scored a pair of penalty kicks, while Erik Hurtado and Jordan Harvey scored for the Whitecaps, who put an end to Portland's 22-match home unbeaten streak.

Portland opened the scoring through Max Urruti just three minutes in, but the Whitecaps drew level in the 16th minute with Morales' first goal. 10 minutes later Morales netted a second PK and Hurtado scored in first-half stoppage time for a 3-1 lead.

Harvey netted four minutes into the second half, but Portland roared back with goal from Gaston Fernandez and Will Johnson in the final 13 minutes, but Vancouver held on for a historic victory.

"It was a great game today," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said. "We took our chances and it was a very good performance. We showed a lot of character. We had never beaten Portland, and I made the guys aware of the before the game. The effort and determination was outstanding."
