Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - D.C. United claimed its first victory of
the 2014 MLS season on Saturday with a 2-0 win over the New England Revolution
at RFK Stadium.
An own goal from Jose Goncalves shortly before halftime handed United the
lead, and newly-acquired midfielder Chris Rolfe capped the win with a goal in
The Revs have now lost three of their first five games this season, and have
been held without a goal in four of those matches.
New England had a chance to open the scoring midway through the first half
when a shot from Diego Fagundez was saved by the foot of United goalkeeper
Andrew Dykstra, while Saer Sene fired the rebound into the outside of the net.
But with the first half winding down, a cross from Cristian Fernandez led to
the first goal as Goncalves attempted to volley the ball clear of the penalty
area, only for it to end up in the back of his own net.
Teal Bunbury went close on two occasions in the second half for the visitors
as he curled a shot just over the crossbar in the 50th minute before narrowly
missing the left post after taking a pass from Chris Tierney.
Fagundez also was set up by Tierney in the 73rd minute, but his acrobatic
flick bounced inches past the post.
Rolfe was acquired in a trade this past week from Chicago, and he came on and
sealed the win with a goal in stoppage time, snapping United's 15-game winless
streak in league play.
