MLS Game Summary - Philadelphia at Houston

(Friday, Aug. 15, 2014)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Houston 2, Philadelphia 0

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Bruin's second-half tally and a late own goal helped the Houston Dynamo claim a much-needed three points with a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union on Friday at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Houston entered the match just five points behind Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the East, and the victory for the home side moved the Dynamo back into the thick of the playoff race with 25 points.

For Philadelphia, the match represented the end of a very busy period which saw the club play three matches over a seven-day span. Jim Curtin's team created some good scoring chances, but ran out of gas down the stretch.

Houston had the best scoring chance of the first half in the 31st minute as Ricardo Clark had a go at goal from the top of the box, but rookie Union goalkeeper Andre Blake dove to his left to make the stop.

Philadelphia answered with a chance on Blake's ensuing goal kick as Sebastien Le Toux got on the end of the long pass for a strike on target, but it went straight into the waiting arms of Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall.

The hosts opened the scoring six minutes into the second half when Giles Barnes got on the end of a long ball down the left flank from Brad Davis. Barnes got to the end line and squared it across to a wide-open Bruin, who finished with ease.

Houston put the game away in the 90th minute with a bit of luck as Barnes' attempted pass from the left wing deflected off the leg of Union defender Ray Gaddis and beat Blake for an own goal.

Despite the defeat, the Union remain in playoff position in fifth place in the East with 27 points.
