Sounders aim to stay hot against Galaxy

Carson, CA (Sports Network) - The Seattle Sounders will look to continue their white-hot form on Saturday when the club visits the StubHub Center to face the Los Angeles Galaxy in a marquee Western Conference clash.

Seattle comes into the clash scorching hot having won five straight and eight of their last nine in league play to climb one point ahead of Real Salt Lake for the Supporters' Shield lead.

Last week's match saw the Sounders roll to a 2-0 victory over RSL at a raucous CenturyLink Field.

It didn't take long for the hosts to start the scoring against their West rivals as Seattle grabbed the lead in the third minute when Nigerian international Obafemi Martins was left free in the penalty area to fire home a low cross from Andy Rose.

Real Salt Lake kept more of the possession in the first half after allowing the first goal, but were soon behind by two when Lamar Neagle fired one past RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando in the 38th minute.

The result saw the Sounders reach 49 points on the season, one more than RSL with seven matches remaining.

"We've kept climbing. We've kept climbing and now we're in first place," Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid said. "Now we have to make sure we stay there and enjoy the view a little bit.

"We believe in ourselves and today was our day to turn believers out of the doubters," Schmid continued. "It was our chance to show that this is a team we can beat and a team we can play against and we can play well."

Los Angeles, meanwhile, is also in need of a rebound performance after settling for a 2-2 draw against D.C. United at RFK Stadium last week.

Robbie Keane opened the scoring for LA just seven minutes in, but Chris Pontius leveled things for D.C. in the 39th minute.

The Galaxy again took the lead again late on through a goal from defender Michael Stephens, but Kyle Porter scored for United in the 84th minute to salvage a point for his club.

"We're disappointed. At the end of the game, we're positioned to have three points and we need to do better in those situations. It was a day where we give D.C. United credit -- they played real for 90 minutes," said Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena.

"We had to battle real hard. We positioned ourselves poorly at the end of the first half by -- I call it giving away a goal. Give [Chris] Pontius credit as well for stripping Omar [Gonzalez] and finishing off the play. Then we got the second goal, which should be enough to give us three points, [but] we failed to keep them off the scoreboard at the end of the game, so that's disappointing."
