MLS Game Summary - New York at New England

(Sunday, June 8, 2014)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: New York 2, New England 0

Foxborough, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gillette Stadium has been a house of horrors for the Red Bull New York franchise, but Mike Petke's men managed to reverse their fortunes at the venue by getting a 2-0 win over the New England Revolution on Sunday.

New York entered Sunday's affair with a 0-13-7 record in its last 20 league games at Gillette Stadium with its last victory coming on June 29, 2002.

But a first-half goal from Eric Alexander and second-half strike from Peguy Luyindula helped snap New York's horrid run in Foxborough, Mass., lifting the Red Bulls to their first league win since May 4.

The opener came in the 17th minute when Alexander got on the end of Lloyd Sam's free kick and capitalized on some poor positioning from Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to nod the delivery into the back of the net.

New England nearly leveled the score just before the close of the first half when Diego Fagundez darted across the top of the penalty area and unleashed a fierce right-footed shot, but the post came to Luis Robles' rescue and the Red Bulls averted danger.

It proved to be a costly miss for the hosts as New York doubled its advantage in the 76th minute when Luyindula took a failed clearance from Jose Goncalves and whipped a first-time volley past Shuttleworth.

Teal Bunbury missed a sitter late in the match to cap a miserable outing for the Revs, who still reside at the top of the Eastern Conference on 23 points despite dropping their last two league games.

New York climbs to 18 points with the win, which ended the club's four-game winless run.
