Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - A goal in the 85th minute from Steven
Lenhart allowed the San Jose Earthquakes to avoid a fifth successive defeat on
Saturday as the club claimed a 1-1 draw at Red Bull New York.
The home side took the lead in the 33rd minute through a Bradley Wright-
Phillips penalty kick, but Lenhart came through with his first goal of the
season five minutes from time to salvage a point for the visitors.
San Jose entered Saturday's match having scored just once in its last four
games, and New York goalkeeper Luis Robles did well to deny a shot from
Yannick Djalo in the 16th minute.
Wright-Phillips went close with a flicked shot in the 27th before his header
was cleared off the goal line by San Jose's Jason Hernandez in the 31st.
But the forward didn't have to wait too long for another chance as Lenhart
knocked Tim Cahill over inside the penalty area on a corner kick, allowing
Wright-Phillips to send goalkeeper Jon Busch the wrong way from the spot.
Robles denied a header from Lenhart with a fingertip save shortly before the
break, while Eric Alexander squandered a good chance for New York in the 55th.
Wright-Phillips nearly put the game out of reach in the final 10 minutes, but
Busch produced a fine stop to keep his team in the game, and he was rewarded a
few minutes later as Lenhart found the net to snatch a point for his team.
