Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Toronto FC traded
second-half goals in a 1-1 draw at BMO Field on Wednesday as TFC's Jermain
Defoe scored the equalizer from the penalty spot in the 64th minute.
Vancouver's Darren Mattocks put his side in front five minutes after halftime,
but Defoe leveled the match from the spot after he was tripped inside the area
by the Whitecaps Nigel Reo-Coker.
Toronto had a few chances to win the match in the closing minutes, but the
team instead had to settle for its third draw in five games.
The best chance for either side in the first half came in the 40th minute when
a shot from Toronto's Jonathan Osorio was saved by Vancouver goalkeeper David
Ousted, allowing Defoe to score on the rebound. However, the goal was ruled
out for offsides and the two teams entered the half scoreless.
The Whitecaps broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Russell Teibert
worked his way down the left wing and delivered a low ball into the area for
Mattocks, who beat three defenders to the pass and fired home a first-time
Toronto answered 14 minutes later when Defoe was tripped by Reo-Coker inside
the box, and the Englishman picked himself up and sent Ousted the wrong way
from the spot to level the contest.
There were two chances for Toronto to win the game in the closing minutes as
Michael Bradley's free kick found Nick Hagglund inside the box for a diving
header that went just over the crossbar.
Gilberto also had an opportunity to be the hero, but he turned a header just
over the net from eight yards after a cross from Defoe.
