MLS Game Summary - New York at New England

(Sunday, July 8, 2012)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: New England 2, New York 0

Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - It was a debut to remember for Jerry Bengston.

Bengston, who signed for the New England Revolution as a Designated Player on Thursday, came on as a substitute and scored six minutes from time to help the Revs secure a 2-0 win over Red Bull New York at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

Lee Nguyen had give New England the lead in the first half, but with New York pushing for an equalizer in the second half, it was Bengston's goal that quelled any hopes of a comeback from the visiting Red Bulls.

The result is just the most recent in a long line of positive results for the Revolution over the Red Bulls in Foxborough, MA. Since the 2002 season, New England has won 13 of the 17 matches between the two sides in Massachusetts across regular season and postseason play.

Gillette Stadium is proving to be quite the fortress this season; the Revolution (6-7-4) have taken 18 of its 22 points from home matches this term.

Meanwhile, the Red Bulls (9-5-4) miss a prime opportunity to climb into first place in the Eastern Conference as they remain third on 31 points.

New England went in front midway through the opening period when Nguyen played the ball out wide to Chris Tierney and smashed the return pass through traffic and past goalkeeper Ryan Meara with a low shot just inside the post.

The Revs had a golden opportunity to double the lead before the close of the first half when A.J. Soares nodded a set piece delivery from Benny Feilhaber off the crossbar. The Red Bulls failed to cleared their lines and the ball fell to Blake Brettschneider, but the forward inexplicably missed the wide open chance as his shot was cleared off the line by Roy Miller.

New York came out much stronger in the second half and nearly broke through in the 56th minute. Kenny Cooper unleashed a tremendous shot from outside the box but was denied by the post.

The visitors were left to rue that miss as Bengston put the match beyond reach in the 84th minute.

Saer Sene latched on to a through ball in the box but Meara produced a fine save to deny the Frenchman. The rebound fell to Bengston who was following up to tuck home the loose ball from close range.

New England returns to action July 14 with a match against Toronto FC at Gillette Stadium while New York takes on Seattle Sounders FC at Red Bull Arena on July 15.
