Union face tough task against Galaxy at StubHub

Carson, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Union will aim for a bounce- back effort on Sunday when the club travels to the StubHub Center to battle the Los Angeles Galaxy.

After earning a shock 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City last Wednesday, Philadelphia fell flat three days later in a 5-3 loss at PPL Park to the surging New England Revolution.

The Union fell behind on Saturday after just 13 minutes when A.J. Soares connected on a header from a free kick and Diego Fagundez made it 2-0 in the 26th minute.

Philadelphia pulled one back in the 36th minute when Vincent Nogueira blasted one into the top left corner from about 25 yards out to make it 2-1 at the break.

But New England took firm control of proceedings in the second half as goals from Lee Nguyen, Chris Tierney and rookie Patrick Mullins ballooned the lead to 5-1 in the 67th minute.

Philadelphia got a pair of goals back through Sheanon Williams and Sebastien Le Toux, but it wasn't enough as the Revs claimed a fourth straight victory and first at PPL Park in club history.

"Let's face it, everything they shot was a goal and it was just simply one of those nights," said Williams.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, is coming off a much-needed win over FC Dallas on Wednesday to snap a four-match winless streak.

The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a rocket strike into the top left corner and Gyasi Zardes made it 2-0 for the hosts just before the break when the nodded home a driven cross off the foot of Juninho.

The visitors pulled one back in the 65th minute when Tesho Akindele slipped in behind the Galaxy back line and finished a diagonal through ball form Jair Benitez at the near post.

"I think two good goals. Obviously, Keane's was a spectacular finish and Gyasi (Zardes) is in a good spot to put away that good," said Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena. "We're pleased with that. Probably, we had a few opportunities to get a second one. I think it was a good night for us.

"Juninho had a really good game," Arena continued. "He's arguably our best player the first nine games of the season. He's been very consistent and had another good night tonight."

In the clubs' only meeting last season, the Galaxy came away with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Philadelphia at PPL Park on May 15, 2013.
