Final Score: Real Salt Lake 2, New England 1
Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Javier Morales and Joao Plata both converted
penalty kicks to lift Real Salt Lake to a 2-1 win over the New England
Revolution at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday, snapping RSL's five-game winless
Morales scored from the spot in the 35th minute, only for the Revs to equalize
two minutes later through Darrius Barnes.
The difference came 25 minutes from time when Plata scored RSL's second spot
kick to hand the Revs their four successive defeat after John Stertzer was
fouled by New England's Chris Tierney.
Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando both returned to the Salt Lake lineup after
being away on international duty with the United States, and Beckerman tested
Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth in the 10th minute with a shot that forced
a good save from the netminder.
Shuttleworth denied Beckerman again midway through the first half before Luis
Gil tried his luck with a shot that Shuttleworth also turned aside.
Chris Schuler was fouled by Barnes inside the penalty area on a corner kick
and Morales stepped forward to smack his shot home from 12 yards, handing the
hosts the lead.
However, the advantage lasted just two minutes as Barnes nodded home a free
kick from Tierney to level the contest.
New England came within inches of the lead in the 53rd when Jose Goncalves
struck the post, but Salt Lake came back 12 minutes later to regain control of
the match when Stertzer was fouled by Tierney.
Plata scored from the spot to make it 2-1 to RSL, and Morales nearly added a
third goal with a free kick that curled just past the top corner of the net.
