Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Joao Plata scored in the 81st minute to help
Real Salt Lake earn a 1-1 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Rio Tinto
Stadium on Saturday.
The Whitecaps went in front in the 72nd minute after Darren Mattocks converted
a penalty kick following a contentious decision inside the area, but Plata
answered back nine minutes later to help his side salvage a point and avoid a
fourth loss in five games.
Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted was called into action just three minutes
into the contest when a free kick from Javier Morales forced Ousted to make a
diving stop at his top right corner.
Mattocks had the best chance of the half for the Whitecaps in the 38th minute
when he raced past an RSL defender and got into the penalty area on the left
before curling a shot wide of the far post from six yards.
Morales had another good look on a set piece from the edge of the area with 20
minutes to play, but his dipping effort sailed just inches over the crossbar.
Salt Lake defender Nat Borchers was then called for a very questionable
penalty in the 72nd when he appeared to get the ball in a tackle with Mattocks
inside his own box. But referee Edvin Jurisevic pointed to the spot and
Mattocks sent goalkeeper Nick Rimando the wrong way.
The hosts responded well, however, and pressured Vancouver for the rest of the
most before being rewarded in the 81st minute as Kyle Beckerman played a ball
wide to Plata on the left, allowing him to get into the penalty area and drive
a shot inside the far post.
