MLS Game Summary - Colorado at Chivas USA

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Colorado 1, Chivas USA 1

Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Martin Rivero scored 10 minutes from time to salvage a point for the Colorado Rapids in a chippy 1-1 draw with Chivas USA on Sunday at StubHub Center.

Coming off a lackluster 2-0 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes last week, the Goats did well to take advantage of space early in the match and quickly found themselves on the front foot.

The home side found the net just five minutes in when Erick Torres collected a ball down the right flank and fed a wide-open Carlos Alvarez, who ripped a well-placed strike into the top left corner, leaving Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin with no chance for a save.

The Rapids had a golden chance to equalize in the 28th minute when Chivas defender Steve Purdy was shown a yellow card for a handball in the box, resulting in a penalty kick.

Deshorn Brown stepped up to take the kick, but Goats' goalkeeper Dan Kennedy got down quickly to keep it out and keep his team in front.

Despite holding the early advantage, things started to go downhill for the home side in the 33rd minute when midfielder Gabriel Farfan was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge, reducing Chivas to 10 men.

But after the break, the Rapids also went down to 10 men when Tony Cascio was shown a second yellow card by referee Chris Penso in the 49th minute.

Things then got even worse for the Goats when Tristan Bowen was shown a red card for spitting, bringing the home side down to nine for the final 27 minutes of play.

Shrugging off all the extracurriculars, the Rapids finally managed to find their equalizer with a fantastic piece of play in the 80th minute when Chris Klute sent a great ball into the area where Rivero got a free header away and directed it into the top left corner.

The result extends the Rapids' unbeaten streak in league play to eight consecutive matches and they haven't lost to Chivas USA since March 21, 2009, holding an 8-0-3 mark over that span.

Chivas, meanwhile, is winless in three consecutive league games since a 1-0 result over Toronto FC on July 17.
