MLS Game Summary - Chicago at New York

(Saturday, May 10, 2014)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Chicago 5, New York 4

Harrison, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Harrison Shipp struck for a hat trick and added an assist on Saturday, leading the Chicago Fire to a nervy first win of the season, a wild 5-4 thriller over the New York Red Bulls, at Red Bull Arena.

Chicago entered the match as the only winless team in MLS, but Shipp, the 22- year-old rookie, along with goals from Quincy Amarikwa and Patrick Nyarko, made sure the Fire came away with an unlikely three points.

Bradley Wright-Phillips netted a hat trick for New York and Tim Cahill also found the back of the net, but it wasn't enough over the course of a wild 90 minutes as the Red Bulls' four-match unbeaten run came to an end.

Shipp opened the scoring after just four minutes, but Cahill responded two minutes later to put the sides back on level terms before the 10-minute mark.

The Red Bulls took the lead in the 38th minute when Thierry Henry chipped one across the face of goal and Wright-Phillips was there to volley it home to take the advantage into the intermission.

But the Fire came to life in the second half. Amarikwa beat his defender and nodded a cross from Jeff Larentowicz past New York goalkeeper Luis Robles to make it 2-2 in the 49th minute.

The Fire took the lead through Shipp in the 54th minute and he completed his treble four minutes later to hand Chicago a 4-2 advantage just prior to the hour mark.

Nyarko made it 5-2 in the 64th minute with a strike from the right flank that was intended as a cross but floated into the top left corner of the net, leaving Robles with no chance for a save.

Wright-Phillips hit for his second of the match in the 67th minute and converted a penalty kick 12 minutes from time to bring New York within 5-4.

With five minutes of stoppage time shown and the game wide open, New York threw numbers forward looking for an equalizer and Wright-Phillips had a chance to be a hero as the ball fell to him in the penalty area with only seconds remaining. But his strike was straight at Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

The result sees the Fire improve to nine points, while New York remains on 14 points.
