MLS Game Summary - Montreal at Philadelphia

(Saturday, July 14, 2012)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Philadelphia 2, Montreal 1

Chester, PA (Sports Network) - Carlos Valdes scored in stoppage time to cap a wild finish at PPL Park, as the Philadelphia Union edged the Montreal Impact, 2-1, on Saturday night for its third straight win in MLS.

The match was scoreless until the 82nd minute, when Lionard Pajoy notched the first goal for the Union. Montreal pulled even on an own goal in the 89th, but Valdes followed with his first goal of the season early in stoppage time.

Philadelphia (6-9-2) is perfect in July with wins over the Los Angeles Galaxy, Toronto FC and the Montreal Impact, and have won three of their last four. The Union moved within one point of Montreal for eighth in the Eastern Conference, and have played four fewer matches.

"What do we have? Four games in hand on Montreal? We got the west coast games out of the way, so we have a good east coast push here," Philadelphia defender Sheanon Williams. "This stretch is gonna be really important for us."

Montreal (6-12-3) has lost three of its last four games and still has just one win - and four points - in 11 road matches in its debut season.

Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath made three big saves to keep the match scoreless, all coming against Impact striker Marco Di Vaio. Jack McInerney and Pajoy both were denied by Montreal goalie Donovan Ricketts for Philadelphia.

The breakthrough came in the 82nd, when Antoine Hoppenot forced a save at the near post from Ricketts that fell to Pajoy, who stabbed in a loose ball from a few yards out for his fifth goal this season.

Philadelphia gave the goal back off a corner in the 89th, as Keon Daniel drove the ball into his own net at the near post. But Valdes picked up his teammate, as slotted to the bottom-left corner for the match-winner.

"The way we lost this game leaves me speechless," Montreal coach Jesse Marsch said. "We have to figure out how to get over the hump. We can't seem to figure out how to take good performances and turn them into results."

Montreal hopes to rebound Wednesday at home against the New England Revolution and Philadelphia visits Red Bull New York on July 21 for its next match.
