MLS Game Summary - Columbus at Montreal

(Sunday, July 8, 2012)

From The Sports Network

Final Score: Montreal 2, Columbus 1

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew appeared to be on their way to three vital points on the road but the Montreal Impact stormed back to steal a 2-1 win at the Stade Saputo on Sunday.

Milovan Mirosevic put the visitors in front in the 64th minute, but the Impact responded with two goals in the final 12 minutes as Zarek Valentin and Patrice Bernier spoiled the Crew's unbeaten record when scoring the first goal of a league match this season.

Columbus (6-6-4) has lost two of its last three league contests and drops into a tie with the New England Revolution for sixth place in the Eastern Conference on 22 points apiece.

Montreal (6-11-3) snaps a three-game losing skid to keep pace in the playoff hunt, staying put in eighth place with 21 points on the year.

After a tame first half with scoring chances at a premium, Mirosevic brought the game to life with a header off of a corner kick delivery from Nemanja Vukovic.

Montreal got on level terms 14 minutes later when Sanna Nyassi picked out the run of Valentin on the right side of the penalty area. The Impact defender took one touch and smashed his effort past Andy Gruenebaum for the equalizer.

The home side left it late but ultimately claimed all three points after Chris Birchall's rash challenge on Justin Mapp in the box helped the Impact earn a penalty kick in the 89th minute. Bernier converted the ensuing attempt for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Both sides return to action on July 14 as Montreal hits the road for a meeting with the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park and Columbus returns home to host Sporting Kansas City at Crew Stadium.
