The Carolina RailHawks (4-5-4, 17 pts.) defeated FC Edmonton (3-2-7, 11 pts.) on Saturday evening at WakeMed Soccer Park 2-0 with goals by Nick Zimmerman and Breiner Ortiz. It was the RailHawks fourth consecutive win in NASL league play and second consecutive shutout defensively. The RailHawks have now won 6 of the last 7 matches.

“Today we had a great first half and scored the goals we deserved,” said Head Coach Colin Clarke. “In the second half we didn’t play well, made a lot of mental errors and did not handle the ball properly. We had a big defensive showing to earn the shutout and get 3 valuable points. We will work hard during the week to be sure we are ready for the game next week.”

The RailHawks came out of the gate attacking and in the second minute of play captain Kupono Low made a dangerous run on the left resulting in his shot hitting the post. In the 34th minute of play, Carolina got ahead on the scoreboard when Zimmerman had a great play down the goal line and his shot went through the goalkeeper’s legs. It was his 6th goal of the season, to lead the RailHawks in scoring. Austin Da Luz got his third assist on the season. Four minutes later, Colombian midfielder Ortiz scored his first career goal to put the RailHawks up 2-0 after an assist from Zack Schilawski.

In the second half Carolina continued dominating with several scoring chances before giving up control to the Eddies. In the 77th minute of play midfielder Amir Lowery was ejected after receiving his second yellow card of the match. The RailHawks spent the rest of the half defending trying to keep the shutout despite a barrage of shots from the Edmonton players.

The RailHawks will travel to Florida on June 30th to play against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at 7:30 PM. The game can be watched live at www.CarolinaRailHawks.com/live. The RailHawks will return to action at WakeMed Soccer Park on July 3rd at 7:00 PM in a special night that will include a fireworks show when the Silverbacks come to town. Tickets for the match are available online at www.CarolinaRailHawks.com.
