Former North Carolina midfielder Kirk Urso dies

Posted August 5, 2012

Columbus Crew midfielder Kirk Urso, the captain of North Carolina's 2011 national championship team, died Saturday night, the team announced Sunday.

He was 22.

No other details about Urso's death were available early Sunday.

After leading North Carolina to a national title in his senior season, Urso, a Lombard, Ill. native, was the 10th overall pick in Major League Soccer's supplemental draft in January.

Urso is North Carolina's all-time matches played leader and closed out his career with three goals and seven assists in 2011.
