Railhawks earn tie against FC Edmonton
Posted September 13, 2012
Edmonton, Canada — The Carolina RailHawks (9-8-9, 35 pts.) earned a 2-2 draw against FC Edmonton (5-9-12, 24 pts.) in Canada with two goals from Nick Zimmerman.
The point allowed the RailHawks to climb to 4th place in the NASL standings with just 3 games left for the team.
Zimmerman scored his 14th and 15th goals on the season for Carolina and FC Edmonton’s Michael Porter matched Zimmerman with two goals on the night. A top four finish will guarantee the RailHawks a home playoff game.
The game got off to a fast start with a pair of goals in the first 9 minutes. The RailHawks scored the first goal of the match in the 5th minute when Ty Shipalane intercepted a pass, beat the Edmonton defender and served up a cross for Zimmerman, who calmly placed the cross into the back of the net.
Four minutes later Michael Cox received a pass on the right hand side and served a cross that found an unmarked Porter in the box, to head in the equalizer. Following the early goals, both teams continued to find open space around the box, but were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
In the second half, the Eddies found their second goal of the match in the 49th minute when Porter scored his second goal of the evening off a RailHawks defensive turnover. Just 8 minutes later Zimmerman would equalize the match.
Zimmerman’s original shot was deflected by an Edmonton defender, but after gathering the deflected ball, he placed a bending shot past Edmonton keeper, Lance Parker, with the outside of his right foot. The RailHawks, looking to take full advantage of their game in hand, continued to push for the game winner, but Edmonton’s Parker denied the RailHawks advances with superb saves to end the match in a stalemate.
The RailHawks have two more games on the road on Sunday and next Wednesday before returning to close out the 2012 NASL Regular Season against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, Sept. 22nd at WakeMed Soccer Park.
