NC State’s strong fifth inning performance lifted the No. 7 seed Wolfpack over No. 2 seed Louisville, 5-2, in the third quarterfinal of the 2017 ACC Softball Championship at North Carolina’s Anderson Stadium.
The win marks the Wolfpack’s second tournament win over the Cardinals. NC State (18-37, 10-14) will advance to the semifinals where they’ll face the winner of the North Carolina/Syracuse matchup.
“I was real pleased with how we swung the bats," NC state head coach Shawn Rychcik said. "I think we really set the tone that we would come out fighting. We got one on the board and got another one and gave one back. It’s who we are.
"We kept grinding them out. It was phenomenal."
Through three innings, junior shortstop Alyssa Compton recorded two hits at two at bats including one run and one RBI, to help the Wolfpack jump to an early 2-0 lead.
Louisville kept the game close as left fielder Jordan McNary scored on a throwing error by the second baseman to put the Cardinals on the board, 2-1, in the bottom of the third. After a strong top of the fifth by the Wolfpack, where they scored three runs, the Cardinals responded with Alison Szydlowski’s home run on the first pitch to make the score, 5-2.
NC State held Louisville to only two hits across the final two innings to secure the win.
Louisville (31-19, 14-8) is now 1-1 against No. 7 seeds in the tournament.
ACC fans will be able to watch all seven games of the championship as Thursday’s and Friday’s contests will be televised by the league’s Regional Sports Networks, and Saturday’s title game will be carried live on ESPN.
