Special Ops unit helps NC State prepare for season

Posted July 22, 2014

Athletes commonly reach points when they physically don't think they can keep going.

Coaches all across the country come up with a variety of ways to help players get beyond that wall of personal defeat. NC State coach Dave Doeren took a military approach last week.

They are hearing a voice they haven’t heard before. This is a part of “the program,” a group of special operations marines whose mission is to push NC State’s football players beyond barriers.

“I wanted to put them in a position to where I exposed them one way or the other where the good things came out or the bad came out,” Doeren said.

What these players go through is physically taxing and more.

“But it's only physically challenging to get to a mental state where you really have to think and become accountable under duress and become a better teammate,” Doeren said.

Doeren hopes this develops a circle of leadership among the players, something that was missing last year.

“We were coming in under a new staff,” defensive end Art Norman said. “I feel like we didn't have a lot of senior leaders. They didn't know how to set the tempo because it was a new tempo. We didn't know what to expect. We all were going through it together. Nobody kind of stepped out and led from the team.”

This exercise could be very beneficial to a squad that is so young.

“I thought it was a great way to simulate just the stress of the game day atmosphere for a young football team,” said Doeren. “Seventy-one percent of our team is freshman or sophomores so we're just trying to find ways to help those guys be ready for game day mentally.”

The Florida State fight song blares in the background, all to form a mental image of the real contest between the Wolfpack and Seminoles on September 27.

What the author of this article doesn't realize is that the picture of NCSU football players caring wood beams is actually a class they are taking as part of their Exercise Science major (33% of NC State football players) and they receive an "A" for carrying those beams across the field.

"Spent time teaching these young pups. Dumb." Really? Spending time teaching them is dumb, and all this time you have touted yourself as the great educator. Go figure.
"Doeren will not last after this season. Will not win an ACC game, again." So now you can tell the future? Is that Fortune Telling 101 at VT? You gave JG heck because at half time during a game she predicted how the game would end and now here you are predicting how a full season will end. Can you say hypocrite?
I don't see how this can be anything less than good for State players. They will be around real men that can help and guide them. Good job Doeren.

[quote]good luck with that. More talent may be a better to win more games. Go heels.

How should we bring in more talent? Tutors writing papers for the athletes? No Show Classes? Get an agent to give rental cars to our players?

Oh show me might UNC fan... how can we possibly bring our program to the same level as UNC???

LOL at the shear volume of "hater" comments in EVERY State article I look at on WRAL these days. This Hans dude obviously has no life outside of this "hobby". Glad to see the obsession from opposing fan bases - I guess the PackPride Ivestigative Team has gotten deeply imbedded under their skin.

As far as the topic at hand - I love it. It's called team building and happens at every level of sports as well as business from the NFL to Fortune 500 companies. Can't help but laugh at the UNC fans calling this a gimmick, given "coach redbull's" antics like the illegal invite-only "Freak-show" camp.
