Saint Augustine’s University opened the 2012-13 men’s basketball season with an 82-75 loss to Virginia Intermont College at Time Warner Arena on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012. This was the preliminary contest before the NBA game between the Charlotte Bobcats and the Dallas Mavericks.

Joel Kindred (Jr./Raleigh, N.C.) led the Falcons with 17 points while Percy Woods (Sr./Washington, D.C.) scored 12 points and Kyle Saunders (Soph./Hampton, Va.) chipped in 11 points on 3-for-6 three-point shooting for the Falcons, who lost despite outshooting their opponent percentage-wise (49.1 to 45.1) and winning the rebounding battle (37-30).

The Cobras scored 26 points off 16 Falcon turnovers and shot twice as many free throws as St. Aug to gain their first win in five tries. The Cobras made 27 of 45 free throw attempts for 60 percent while the Falcons made 15 of 20 free throw attempts for 75 percent. Virginia Intermont also got a big scoring effort from their leading scorer Joshua Hart, who led all scorers with 28 points. He made 11 of 13 free throw attempts.

Anthony Goode added 18 points and Justin Morris scored 17 points for the Cobras, who went into halftime ahead 39-34 after leading by as many as 13 points in the first half. The Falcons regrouped in the second half to lead 64-63 on a free throw by Kindred with 5:20 left in the game, but the Cobras finished with a 19-11 run for the win.

The loss was the first in three regular-season games for the Falcons at Time Warner Cable Arena. It also ruined the debut of Lonnie Blow, Jr., who returned as the St. Aug head coach this season. Blow previously coached at St. Aug from 2008 to 2010 and guided the Falcons to the CIAA title in the 2009-10 season.

The Falcons will look to bounce back at home in Emery Gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012. They will host Pfeiffer University in a non-conference game starting at 7:30 p.m.
