Posted December 9, 2012

— Led by the trio of Kelly Shaw, Dane Hyatt and DeJon Wilkinson, the Saint Augustine’s University track and field team earned nine new NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks at the 2012 CNU Holiday Open hosted by Christopher Newport University at the Freeman Center on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.

Shaw (Sr./Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won the women’s 400 meter dash in 55.92 seconds and finished third in the 200 dash in 25.31 seconds. The 4x400 relay team including Shaw, Nicketa Bernard (Jr./Westmoreland, Jamaica), Cherrisse Lynch (So./Bridgetown, Barbados) and Brittany Brown (Sr./Akron, Ohio) placed first in 3:47.39.

Hyatt (Jr./Jamaica) won the men’s 400 dash in 48.46 seconds. The men’s 4x400 relay team including Hyatt, Josh Edmonds (Jr./Jacksonville, Fla.) James Quarles (Jr./Washington, D.C.) and Burkheart Ellis, Jr. (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) was victorious in 3:16.82. Hyatt is the 2012 Jamaican 400 champion and competed in the London Olympics. Wilkinson (Jr./Summerville, S.C.) cleared a height of 48-8 to win the men’s triple jump.

Other qualifiers include Jermaine Jones (Fr./Wilmington, N.C.), who was second in the men’s 200 dash in 21.74 seconds. Sherri -Ann Ashman (So./Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed second in the women’s 400 dash in 57.65, and Eddie Shelton (Jr./Deltona, Fla.) was seventh in the men’s high jump with a height of 6-8.75.

Jones, who already qualified in the men’s 60 dash a week ago, finished second in the event. Quarles was second in the men’s 400 while Gerkenz Senesca (Sr./Newark, N.J.) and Ty’reak Murray (Jr./Portsmouth, Va.) were second and third, respectively, in the men’s 60 hurdles. Bernard was third in the women’s 400. Senesca and Murray ran provisional times in their event last week.
Jones currently ranks third in Division II in the men’s 60 and 200. Shaw is third in the women’s 400 and Senesca ranks third in the men’s 60 hurdles. Both the men’s and women’s 4x400 relay teams are third and Wilkinson ranks third in the men’s triple jump.

The running times at the CNU Holiday Open were converted due to the track size at the Freeman Center.
