Saint Augustine’s University fell behind early and never recovered in a 88-68 CIAA women’s basketball loss to Shaw University at Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013.

The loss put the Lady Falcons at 11-12 overall and 4-4 in the Southern Division with two games left. The Lady Bears, ranked 15th nationally in Division II, are 20-4 overall and 6-2 in the division.
Forward Terri Jacobs (Fr./McDonough, Ga.) and guard Jasmine Cuffee (So./Norfolk, Va.) tied for team scoring honors with 13 points for the Lady Falcons. Guard Porscha Walton (Fr./Chesterfield, Va.) added 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals at the point guard position for the Lady Falcons, who fell behind 24-14 midway in the first half and played catch-up the rest of the game.

Among the nation’s top 15 teams in Division II in steals per game, the Lady Falcons reached their average with 12 steals as they forced the Lady Bears to commit 22 turnovers. But the Lady Bears dominated inside, snatching a whopping 64 rebounds to 36 for the Lady Falcons. Crystal Gordon led the Lady Bears with 12 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Taylor Dalrymple had a game-high 16 points and eight boards and Crystal Harris contributed eight rebounds with 12 points as five Lady Bears pulled down seven or more rebounds each.
“We didn’t box out and rebound and it killed us,” St. Aug Head Coach Rachel Bullard said.

The game was won on the boards as the Lady Bears, with a huge size advantage, outscored the Lady Falcons 23-5 in second chance points and outscored the home team 42-24 in the paint.

Leading 42-24 at halftime, the Lady Bears stretched their lead to 23 points with 8:35 remaining. The Lady Falcons, with a roster including five freshmen and three sophomores, never quit despite the huge deficit. Cuffee scored eight points, including two three-pointers, during a 16-5 run as the Lady Falcons closed the gap to 76-64 at the 5:26 mark. The Lady Falcons would get no closer, however, as they suffered their seven straight loss in three seasons to their crosstown nemesis. The Lady Bears swept the season series.

The Lady Falcons hit the road for a CIAA game against Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
