Shippensburg, Pa. — Saint Augustine's University mounted a furious second-half rally, but West Liberty held on for an 80-74 women's basketball victory in the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic at Heiges Field House on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012.
Porscha Walton (Fr./Chesterfield, Va.) scored 17 points while Tahsha Mitchell (Jr./South Holland, Ill.) and Jasmine Cuffee (So./Norfolk, Va.) added 14 points and 11 points, respectively, for the Lady Falcons, who trailed 51-33 at halftime but outscored West Liberty 41-29 in the second half.
West Liberty opened a 59-37 lead five minutes into the second half before the Lady Falcons climbed back in the game. A layup Briana Arrington (So./Richmond, Va.) capped a 32-9 run with 4:41 left to give the Lady Falcons a 69-68 lead. It was their first lead since early in the first half.
West Liberty (2-1) finished off the game with a 12-5 run to hand the Lady Falcons their second defeat in as many games. Hillary Southworth scored 30 points and Meghan Wiseman added 20 points for West Liberty, which shot 57 percent from the floor including 53 percent behind the three point line.
Southworth scored 24 points in the first half to spark West Liberty to a big lead. The Lady Falcons turned up the defensive pressure after halftime, holding Southworth to six points in the second half. After shooting 78 percent behind the three-point arc in the first half, West Liberty was limited to 17 percent three-point shooting by the Lady Falcons, who also forced 19 of West Liberty's 29 turnovers in the second half. The Lady Falcons held West Liberty to 42 percent shooting in the second half after allowing their opponent to make 66 percent of their shots in the first half. For the game, the Lady Falcons recorded 19 steals including six by Walton.
The Lady Falcons were ultimately done in by their shooting. They shot 36 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Falcons play again Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, against Davis & Elkins in the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic. Game time is 1 p.m.
