Sulser strong in loss to Pelicans

Posted August 10, 2014

Cole Sulser tossed six solid innings on Sunday afternoon for the Carolina Mudcats, but it wasn’t enough as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans came away with a 5-1 win at Five County Stadium. The Pelicans (29-21, 73-45) swept the series. The Mudcats (23-26, 52-64) lost their eighth straight at home.

Cole Sulser (4-11) shouldered a tough defeat after six innings of work. He yielded two runs, one earned, around six hits and struck out six with one walk. Michael Clevinger surrendered three runs on four hits across three innings in his debut with the Mudcats.

Chad James (4-1) earned the victory after hurling five innings with four hits, a run, three walks and five strikeouts. The Pelicans bullpen shut down the Mudcats in four innings. Three Pelicans combined allowed just one hit and six strikeouts.

Yhoxian Medina opened the scoring in the third innings against James. Todd Hankins singled and stole second before Medina lashed a double into the left field corner. Hankins raced around third and crossed home for a 1-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach got some help scoring the tying run in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and second, Lewis Brinson flew out to Luigi Rodriguez in right field. Rodriguez made the catch and Bostick tagged from second. Rodriguez fired a throw towards third base, but it sailed wide. Bostick came home on the error to even the score at one.

The Pelicans got off to a fast start in the sixth inning behind a leadoff single by Luis Mendez and another double by Bostick. The runners moved up on a groundout and a grounder to short by Nick Williams pushed Mendez across for a 2-1 lead.

Bostick capped the scoring for Myrtle Beach in the eighth inning by launched a three-run homer that alighted just inside the left foul pole.

The Mudcats begin a six-game road trip with the first of three in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday, August 12. First pitch against the Pelicans at TicketReturn.com Field is set for 7:05 p.m.
