— Sophomore Christian McCurdy took home the gold medal in the 400 IM on Friday, as the No. 18 NC State men’s swimming team claimed medals in each of the six events contested throughout the day at the 2014 ACC Championships held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Overall, the Pack claimed seven medals throughout the evening and broke the school record in each of the six events throughout the day.

“The Wolfpack men keep swinging and we keep fighting to move up in the team race,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “I’m proud of those guys tonight. They came out tonight and really battled and executed their game plan well.”

With one day remaining in the 2014 ACC Championships, the Pack sits in second place overall with 807.5 points and is just eight points shy of first place Virginia Tech with 815.5 points. North Carolina (675) is in third overall, while Notre Dame (652) and Florida State (646.5) round out the top five.

The Wolfpack opened the evening by claiming the silver medal in the 400 medley relay, as Andreas Schiellerup, Ian Bishop, Barrett Miesfeld and Jonathan Boffa combined to swim the event in a program record mark of 3:04.80. The time in the event eclipsed the previous school record of 3:07.43 and meets the required time standard for an NCAA ‘A’ cut. Schiellerup’s lead-off split of 45.92 in the 100 back breaks the school record he set earlier this season of 46.61.

“The relay got off us off to a good start,” Holloway said. “You have to hand it to Florida State. We both swam really fast times and it was just a phenomenal relay that was college swimming at its best.”

McCurdy captured the gold medal in the 400 IM with the top mark in program history of 3:43.61, surpassing his previous top time of 3:47.78 set last season. The ACC title for McCurdy is the first for an NC State swimmer in the 400 IM since John Randall’s first place performance in 1984.

“Congratulations to Christian McCurdy,” Holloway said. “He is an unbelievable team player. He has an unbelievable work ethic and attitude. The team was ecstatic for him and his emotion was great. To see that as a staff, that’s why we do this for a living.”

Michael Camper also competed in the ‘A’ final of the 400 IM and placed eighth with a time of 3:52.43. In addition, Austin Snyder scored points for State in the ‘B’ final, as he finished 12th overall with a time of 3:50.55.

Five Wolfpackers competed in the evening session of the 200 freestyle, as David Williams claimed the silver medal and Simonas Bilis claimed the bronze. Williams was able to break Boffa’s school record established during the morning preliminaries of 1:34.23 with a finals time of 1:34.14. Bilis touched the wall in 1:34.19, while Boffa claimed fifth with a 1:34.90. In addition, Matt Thomas claimed 16th overall with a time of 1:37.54, while Scott Johnson placed 21st with a 1:39.04 clocking.

In his final ACC Championships, Miesfeld took home the silver medal in the 100 butterfly with program best mark of 45.79, eclipsing his previous mark of 46.14 set last season. Freshman Soren Dahl also competed in the ‘A’ final and touched in 46.93 to claim seventh place. John Newell competed in the ‘B’ final for the Pack and placed 14th in a time of 47.86, while Jason Deana also scored points for the Pack with a time of 47.74 to finish 18th overall.

A native of Austin, Texas, Bishop claimed the bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke after tapping the wall in 53.01, after eclipsing his previous school record of 53.27 in the morning preliminaries with a time of 52.91. Derek Hren competed in the ‘C’ final and placed 18th overall with a time of 53.96.

"Congratulations to Barrett [Miesfeld] and Ian [Bishop] for lowering their school records in the 100 fly and the 100 breast,” Holloway said.

Schiellerup closed the evening with a silver medal in the 100 backstroke with a time of 46.15 to score 28 points. Stephen Coetzer, who captured bronze in the 200 IM on Thursday, also competed in the ‘A’ final and placed seventh with a time of 47.08. Meanwhile, Camper competed in the ‘B’ final for the Pack and touched the wall in 48.06.

“The emotion and energy on deck were great,” Holloway said. “They were just feeding off of each other. We have one more day to go, but I know they’re ready to do all it takes to help the team.”

The Wolfpack will close the 2014 ACC Championships on Saturday, as preliminaries are set to begin at 11 a.m., and finals will begin at 7 p.m., at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
