SWIM/DIVE: More NCSU School Records Fall on Day Three of ACCs

Posted February 23, 2013

— The NC State women's swimming & diving teams continued its streak of record-breaking performances on the third day of the 2013 ACC Championships. The Wolfpack proceeded to break four school records and set 11 top-10 all-time marks.

"The Wolfpack ladies continued a positive surge for the program with an unbelievable amount of nice swims for points," said head coach Braden Holloway. "I'm really encouraged by the progress that we're making and the momentum that we are keeping during the meet."

Junior Zina Grogg broke the school record in the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly. Grogg finished seventh in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.14. The Moon Township, Pa., native broke the school record in the event with a time of 53.50 in the preliminaries. She claimed a bronze medal in the 100 backstroke with a third place finish, touching the wall with a time of 53.42. Earlier in the day, Grogg broke the school record in the event, timing in at 52.93. Both of the times were good for an NCAA 'B' standard.

In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Lauren Poli broke the school record with her swim in the finals. Poli finished sixth in the event with a time of 1:01.79, hitting an NCAA 'B' standard.

"We're really excited about what Lauren did today," said Holloway. "She made some great adjustments from the preliminaries to find a way to be quicker and she executed."

The Wolfpack had by far its best event of the ACC Championships in the 100 backstroke, scoring 41 points for the team. In addition to Grogg's time, sophomore Hannah Freyman posted the second-best all-time mark with a time of 53.68 to claim fifth. State was not done there, as Kaitlin Mills finished 10th with a 54.42 clocking. Mills time is the fourth-best in the event in program history. Nicole Haynes also had a great swim in the event for the Pack, registering the fifth-best time in school history, timing in at 54.61. Each time was good for an NCAA "B" standard.

"The 100 backstroke was a huge event for us, we scored 41 points," Holloway added. "That's been our best event of the weekend and it really gives us good momentum heading into tomorrow."

Freshman Hayley Tomlinson decided to get in on the record-breaking, completing the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:18.42 to claim 10th, post the second-best time in school history and hit an NCAA 'B' standard.

"Tomorrow is going to be a battle," said Holloway. "There's a great team race going on and the morning will be a big morning. We're going to come out and continue our focus of what we came here to do."

In diving, sophomore Rachael Mumma turned in a score of 306.60 on the one-meter diving board for the women, while Hannah Hopkins finished 11th in the event with a 278.45. Mumma's score was good for fifth place. On the men's side, senior Hudson Rains scored a 380.10 on the three-meter board to claim fifth place. Freshman Charles Retter also scored points for the Pack with a mark of 328.85.

"The divers did an awesome job for us today," Holloway said.

After day three of competition, the NC State women's swimming & diving team is fourth with 322 points, while the men's diving team has earned 31 points. Prelims for the final day of competition on Saturday will begin at 11 a.m with finals beginning at 7 p.m.
