SWIM/DIVE: Tar Heels Sweep Duke In Dual Meet Action

Posted January 26, 2013

Duke at UNC

— North Carolina swimming and diving teams bounced back from a loss at Virginia last weekend by decisively beating arch-rival Duke Saturday afternoon at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. On Senior Day for 12 Carolina swimmers and divers, the Tar Heel women prevailed 166-127 while the UNC men won by a 164-128 margin.

“We feel fortunate to pull the meet off with the weather concerns that we had. We had a great crowd, a very partisan crowd, and it’s Senior Day and almost all of our seniors parents were able to get here. We also had a great student body crowd and the band was here. It was a very festive atmosphere. It was a lot of fun all around,” said UNC head coach Rich DeSelm.

Carolina won 10 events on the women’s side, including the 400-yard freestyle relay to finish up the victory. Nine different Tar Heel women won individual events including victories from a pair of seniors swimming in their last home meets in Koury Natatorium. Senior Stephanie Eisenring won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:50.26 while senior Katie Nolan won the 200-yard individual medley in a clocking of 2:06.01.

The Tar Heel men won 12 of 16 events on the day. Senior Brett Nagle finished his home career in style with a pair of individual victories as he won the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:16.86 and had the fastest unshaved 500-yard freestyle of his career with a winning time of 4:30.53. A pair of Tar Heel freshmen also won individual events for Carolina as Logan Heck swept the sprint freestyle events, going 20.53 in the 50-yard freestyle and 45.21 in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Mitch DeForest claimed victories in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:50.04 and in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:51.20.

“We always swim Duke at this time of the year and it’s a great rivalry,” said DeSelm. “We are tuning up for the end of the year. We mixed the lineup up to see some things we hadn’t seen so far this year. They are all still competing for the conference team so we are looking ahead to that.”

With the win the North Carolina women improved to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the ACC while the UNC men are now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. Carolina will complete its dual meet season next Saturday when it competes at NC State with a start time of 11 a.m.

“We spread the wealth around a lot today with a lot of people swimming off events. I don’t think there were a lot of multiple event winners but we had a lot of winners,” said DeSelm. “We have our sights set for going to NC State. We lost to their men last year and their men are improved over last year and their women are definitely improved. It’s the best women’s team they’ve had in a long time. It will be very competitive next Saturday. We’ll take today’s wins and move forward.”
