T&F: immons and Chavis Highlight Wolfpack's Day at UCS Invitational

— The NC State track and field team racked up two first-place finishes, two second-place finishes and 13 top-five finishes on Saturday at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. Paisley Simmons and Nicole Chavis each finished first in their respective events, while Jule Rich and Tremanisha Taylor notched runner-up finishes in both of their events as well for the Pack.

Chavis set a school-record in the women's weight throw with a heave of 67'01.50", shattering her previous school record of 64'04.00". The redshirt sophomore from Lumberton, N.C. has now finished in first place in the weight throw four times this year. SeQuoia Watkins, who finished behind Chavis in third place in the women's weight throw, set a new personal best of 59'06.75" on Saturday. Watkins bested her prior personal record of 58'02.00" set in the Wolfpack's first event of the year, also at the JDL Track in Winston-Salem.

Simmons, who finished first in the women's 200 meter dash and third in the women's 60m dash, took home her fourth first-place finish on the year. The freshman from High Point, N.C. has not finished out of the top five in ten races this year and brought home her first 200m title of the season after finishing second in the event twice prior to tonight. Her time of 24.37 in the 200m was a personal-best in the event.

Also competing in the women's 60m for the Wolfpack were Alexis Perry and Tyra Lea. Perry finished in eighth place with a sprint of 7.84, while Lea came in 13th with a time of 7.92. Lea also took part in the women's 200m, crossing the finish line in 25.29 seconds, good for a fifth-place showing.

In the women's shot put, the Wolfpack placed two in the top-five. Tremanisha Taylor's throw of 50'08.75" put her in second place, while Alyssa Dunn notched her third fifth-place showing on the years with an effort of 41'11.25". Jule Rich garnered a second-place finish in the men's weight throw with his heave of 64'00.25", coming up just shy of setting a new season-best in the event. Nathaniel Williams registered his fifth top-six finish on the year with a toss of 55'07.50".

On the track, the Wolfpack placed four runners in the top 10 in the men's and women's one mile run. On the men's side, Craig Engels finished in third place with a time of 4:09.36, while Matt Schick notched a 24th-place finish. For the women, Erin Mercer (4:52.47), Megan Moye (4:52.69), and Emily Pritt (4:56.98), finished in fifth, sixth and ninth place, respectively.

Jonathan Addison registered a 12th-place finish in the men's 60m dash while also coming in fourth in the men's high jump. Former Wolfpack star and current track and field student assistant Kris Kornegay-Gober, competing unattached in the high jump, came in third in the event with a leap of 6'11.00".

Elizabeth Shuman totaled her fifth top-three effort of the year, finishing third in the women's high jump with a leap of 5'07.00" Amara Bell, competing in two events for the Pack, notched a fifth-place effort in the women's triple jump (37'09.50") and a sixth-place showing in the long jump (18'00.50").

Sam Roberson (8:21.48) and Adrian Ross (8:37.42) finished in seventh-place and 13th-place, respectively, in the men's 3000m run while Vibushan Sivakumaran (1:55.45) notched a 14th-place finish in the men's 800m.
