T&F: Maslowski breaks school record in opener

Redshirt sophomore Teddi Maslowski kick started the 2014 outdoor track and field season by posting a school record mark of 19-4.25 (5.90) in the long jump Friday afternoon at the Carolina Relays in Chapel Hill, N.C. In addition to Maslowski’s school record, numerous Blue Devils notched first-place finishes in the first outdoor meet of the season for the Duke track and field program.

Maslowski, competing in the long jump and the shot put on Friday, set the school record on her sixth and final attempt, placing second overall. Maslowski opened the competition with a mark of 17-10.25 (5.44) before seeing jumps of 19-1.25 (5.82) and 19-3.50 (5.88). Maslowski’s third attempt also bested the previous school record of 19-1.25 (5.82), however the multi-event athlete improved on her own personal-best in her final attempt en route to her school record distance. The Burgettstown, Pa., native closed competition Friday with a 30-1.50 (9.18) effort in the shot put.

Redshirt senior Michelle Anumba captured her first win of the outdoor season, taking first place in the shot put with a mark of 49-9.25 (15.17). Duke’s school-record holder in the shot put, Anumba looks to see similar results in the hammer throw, scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals, returning to competition after setting a school record in the shot put three weeks earlier at the indoor ACC Championships, won the event in Chapel Hill, with a throw of 55-10.50 (17.03). Boals, also competing in the discus, placed second with a mark of 168-8.00 (51.40), earned on his penultimate attempt.

Senior Austin Gamble, joining Boals in the discus, won the event after launching the disc a distance of 173-2.00 (52.79). Gamble, a discus specialist for the Blue Devils, did not compete during the indoor season.

On the track, juniors Elizabeth Kerpon and Lauren Hansson and freshman Madeline Kopp placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively in the 200. Kerpon led the Blue Devils with a finishing time of 24.26, while Hansson clocked a time of 24.65. Kopp closed in a time of 24.74. Kerpon improved on her previous 2014 best of 24.32, run during the indoor season.

In the men’s 200, senior Marcus Wright placed fifth in a time of 22.11. Wright’s time nearly matched his personal-best time of 22.10. Wright is scheduled to compete in the 100m dash, set for Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils return to competition Saturday, with the hammer throw scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
