— The Tar Heels split games on the final day of play at the Louisiana Classic, claiming their first win of the 2014 season with a 3-2 victory over Purdue before finishing the day with a tough 6-5 loss to the No. 13 Cajuns in 10 innings.

Kristen Brown finished the day with two hits and two RBIs, and Amber Parrish added two RBIs with a two-run homer against Louisiana while Lori Spingola tallied nine strikeouts in the win over Purdue.

"I'm really excited with how we played today and bounced back and competed really well," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "The Purdue game was a tough game, but Lori did a great job of controlling their hitters in her first complete game. I was really proud of how we played against Louisiana-Lafayette. We competed in every at-bat and played really good defense, but we just came up short in the end."

"I'm really pleased that we ended playing more like what I wanted us to play like. You never like to lose, but I think we did a lot of good things this weekend. Looking forward, going into our next games, I think we can build on a lot of positive things from our win and a really close loss in extra innings to a ranked team. I feel good about where we're headed," Papa said.

Game One vs. Purdue:
Amy Nece singled up the middle and then advanced to third as Jenna Kelly reached base on an error and moved to second on the throw. With bases loaded after Amber Parrish drew a walk, Kati Causey reached base on another Purdue error, which brought Nece home for the first run.

In the second, Mateen hit a bunt single and stole second before advancing to third and scoring asKristen Brown reached base on an error.

Purdue evened the game with solo home runs in the second and fourth innings by Tori Chiodo and Ashley Burkhardt.

After a quiet fifth for both teams, Carolina got its winning run in the sixth. Elena Covert singled to right, and then pinch runner Erin Satterfield advanced to second when Jordan Scarboro drew a walk. A sac bunt by Nece advanced the runners before Satterfield crossed the plate for the winning run after Brown reached on another Boilermaker miscue.

Lori Spingola picked up the win, tallying nine strikeouts in seven innings while giving up seven hits and two runs.

Game Two vs. Louisiana:
Nece got things started with a single through the left side, which Brown followed with a single to left. Kelly was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Causey, who also took a pitch to force Nece home for the first run. The Tar Heels had the bases still loaded, but Parrish hit into a quick double play to end the inning.

After a scoreless second, the Ragin' Cajuns jumped to a 3-1 lead on Lexie Elkins' blast to right center, which brought in Kassidy Zeringue and Natlie Frenandez who had taken back-to-back walks.

After Causey singled past third, Amber Parrish tied the game with a two-run homer in the fourth.Kendra Lynch then hit an infield single, advancing to second on a groundout before moving to third on a wild pitch. A hard-hit single to center by Darby Rosen scored Lynch, putting the Tar Heels up 4-3 before Brown hit a solo shot in the fifth to increase the lead to two runs.
Louisiana decreased that lead to just one in the sixth after Vincent singled to right and scored on a hard-hit double down the left field line by Sarah Arceneaux. The Cajuns then tied it up in the seventh as Hayden singled to left, advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a double to left by Elkins.

The Tar Heels had runners on first and second in the seventh, but couldn't create any more runs as the game went to extra innings.

There was little action in the eighth and ninth, but Redfearn hit a solo shot to center in the 10th, which would end up being the game winner for the Cajuns.

Lori Spingola took the loss, pitching the final 4.2 innings while striking out three and giving up three hits and two runs. Lauren Batten got her first start in the circle, pitching three innings with two strikeouts, three runs and two hits. Lynch pitched 2.1, giving up one run and three hits with two strikeouts.

Up Next: The Tar Heels, now 1-3, open play at home when they host Campbell on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 4 p.m. UNC then visits Elon on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before heading to Jacksonville, Fla., next weekend.
