Tar Heels fall to Terps in ACC men's soccer title match

No. 2 Maryland used a goal in each half to down No. 3 North Carolina Sunday in the ACC Championship match in Germantown, Md., 2-1.

The Terapins struck in the opening minutes when Dakota Edwards tallied his first career goal to put Maryland in front in the 11th minute.

Maryland earned a corner kick and sent an inswinging ball into the box. The ball bounced around in the box before Edwards jumped on the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net.

The Tar Heels looked to control possession in the midfield after surrendering just their second first half goal of the year.

The teams entered halftime with the score remaining 1-0 in favor of the Terps who outshot UNC by a 6-1 margin.

Carolina came out a stronger side in the second half and were linking passes throughout the midfield and threatening on the offensive end.

Maryland made it a two-goal advantage in the 62nd minute thanks to a Schillo Tshuma goal. Mikey Ambrose had a throw-in on the left side of the field and fed the ball to Tshuma as he entered the box.

Tshuma rushed in on goal and fired a shot that took a deflection off a Tar Heel defender. The ball skipped to goalkeeper Scott Goodwin's right and off the post before ricocheting into the side netting.

The two goals surrendered by the Tar Heels marked the first game since the NCAA Semifinal against UCLA that Carolina had allowed two goals.

The next 20 minutes saw the Tar Heels attempting to make runs at the Maryland defense but were unable to break through in the final third.

With less than five minutes remaining in the contest, the Tar Heels pulled a goal back and made things interesting.

Josh Rice collected a ball at the top of the box and dropped a pass to a cutting Jordan Gafa. The senior defender slid a ball to his left where Rob Lovejoy was waiting.

Lovejoy took a touch before lofting a shot far post and past goalkeeper Keith Cardona to pull Carolina within one.

The goal was Lovejoy's fifth of the year in just eight games played.

Carolina was unable to find the equalizer in the final minutes as the Tar Heels fell for the first time in six matches.

UNC will learn its NCAA Tournament fate at 5:30 p.m. on Monday when the NCAA Tournament field is announced on NCAA.com
