Blog: UNC escapes Richmond, 82-72

Posted November 23, 2013

FINAL: UNC 82, Richmond 72: The Tar Heels trailed much of the first half Saturday but pulled away from Richmond late in the semifinal of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off in an 82-72 win. They were led by 26 points from Marcus Paige on six 3-pointers and another 24 off the bench from Brice Johnson.

Richmond hung close all game guided by 29 points from guard Cedrick Lindsay and 13 off the bench from Kendall Anthony.

3:57 2nd: UNC 66, Richmond 62: At the final media timeout, UNC holds a four-point advantage led by Marcus Paige's 20 points on 5 3-pointers.

7:36 2nd: UNC 61, Richmond 56: After Richmond once again pilled even with UNC, James Michael McAdoo helped the Tar Heels to a five-point lead on his fourth bucket of the game.

Richmond, who has six three's, has stayed with UNC for the entirety of the game after leading for much of the first half.

15:33 2nd: UNC 47, Richmond 40: Marcus Paige hit his second 3-pointer of the game to open up a 7-point lead for UNC and force Richmond into an early timeout in the second half.

Paige has 11 points while Brice Johnson has 12 for UNC.

Half: UNC 36, Richmond 33: Despite trailing for much of the first half, the Tar Heels will take a slim lead to intermission against Richmond in the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Tip-Off.

At the break, UNC has played 13 different guys and are led in scoring by Brice Johnson who has contributed 10 off the bench. Marcus Paige leads the starting-5 in points with eight.

3:48 1st Richmond 30, UNC 27: At the final media timeout of the first half, Richmond continues to lead UNC bolstered by 12 points from Lindsay and five off the bench from Kendall Anthony.

11:47 1st: Richmond 17, UNC 13: In the last four-plus minutes of play, UNC has been unable to gain any ground on Richmond as Lindsay is up to 8 points and four of the five Spiders starters are on the tally sheet.

15:57 1st: Richmond 10, UNC 6: At the first media timeout, each team is slow out of the gates but it is the Spiders that lead UNC behind 5 points from Cedrick Lindsay.

Looking to bounce back from a stunning loss to Belmont, the 24th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels will hit the road on Saturday for a matchup with the Richmond Spiders in the Hall of Fame Tip Off.

Roy Williams has had to move the pieces around in Chapel Hill early on, as he is still dealing with the indefinite suspensions of star P.J. Hairston and Leslie McDonald. The pair did not travel with the team on Friday.

Hairston and McDonald haven't played this year for UNC (2-1) while the school and NCAA review their eligibility. Authorities twice cited Hairston during the offseason while he drove rental cars linked to a felon.

The school hasn't specified McDonald's issue, though it sent a letter ordering a company making designer mouth guards to stop using McDonald on its web site over the summer.

After back-to-back wins to start the season, UNC suffered a rare home loss out of conference, falling to Belmont last Sunday, 83-80. It ended a streak of 82 straight home wins against unranked non-ACC squads for UNC.

The Bruins overcame an eight-point deficit with just three minutes to play to earn an improbable win. UNC trailed by eight points at the half (41-34), but went on a 14-0 run in the second stanza to re-establish control before the late letdown.

James Michael McAdoo had a strong outing in defeat, finishing with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Marcus Paige added 17 points and five assists, while Brice Johnson just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

McAdoo, who failed to live up to all the hype thrust on him a year ago, has started his junior season strong, shooting 50 percent from the field and leading the Tar Heels in both scoring (19.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.7 rpg).

Paige gives the team great balance at the point, as both a scoring threat (18.0 ppg) and deft distributor (4.3 apg). Johnson (12.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg) has been a spark off the bench.

Chris Mooney's Spiders also have one loss on the season, that came at home to Minnesota last weekend, 74-59. The team has put some distance between itself and that loss however, with Tuesday's 74-63 overtime win against Hofstra as part of regional action of this event.

Offensive swagger is not something Richmond has a lot of this season. The team does possess a prolific scorer in senior guard Cedrick Lindsay (19.0 ppg), but there isn't a whole lot of scoring depth on a squad that is averaging a modest 68.2 ppg.

Lindsay does get some help offensively from junior sharp-shooter Kendall Anthony, who adds 12.0 ppg off the bench. Sophomore Terry Allen isn't a huge threat offensively (9.3 ppg), but does present problems for foes on the boards (8.8 rpg).

North Carolina has dominated the series with Richmond, winning 14 of the 16 matchups. UNC has won six straight in a series that has been idle for 16 years. The Spiders' last victory over the Tar Heels came in 1953 (87-82 2 OT).

The winner of Saturday's game will take on either Fairfield or defending national champion Louisville in Sunday's championship game.

Johnson is the best all around big on the team including Mac O donothing. He needs to get the major minutes 30+ at least per game.

  • The Heels Win Again Nov 23, 2013

Nice win for the Heels. Brice is becoming a scorer, which is a definite need. This looks to be the team for the year, outside of McDonald. Unless another of the big men develop, it is going to be a long season!

    GO HEELS!!!
