UNC to open 2015 football season in Charlotte

Posted May 9, 2013

UNC head coach Larry Fedora reacts to a touchdown by A.J. Blue during the North Carolina Tar Heels vs. N.C. State Wolfpack NCAA football game, Saturday, October 27, 2012 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

— The North Carolina Tar Heels will open the 2015 football season with a matchup against South Carolina in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, the school announced on its official website Thursday.

The game, which will take place on Sept. 5, was secured by the Charlotte Sports Foundation.

“We are extremely excited to bring these national football powers and regional rivals together in Charlotte for college football,” Will Webb, executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, said in a statement. “This will be a tremendous game featuring a marquee matchup of ACC and SEC teams.”

The Tar Heels have played 22 football games all-time in Charlotte and have compiled a 15-5-2 record. UNC's last regular season games in the Queen City came in 1998 and 1999 when the Tar Heels downed North Carolina State in consecutive years.

North Carolina has 34-17-4 record against the Gamecocks in 55 meetings, but the two Carolinas have met just 11 times since South Carolina left the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1971.

The Tar Heels open the 2013 regular season with a trip to Columbia to face the Gamecocks on Aug. 29.

The Charlotte Sports Foundation runs the Belk Bowl, which is played annually in Charlotte.

    Commence slow clap.......

Duke also didn't move any of its 3 games with Richmond out of Wallace Wade. How did they turn out?

He's at South Carolina now, not dook, so the wins over UNC are not quite as rare.

What a great showcase game for the Carolina's to kick off the college football season.

Tough game to start the season with - it should be a good test, though.

Quit it...Buffy is still believing that the LAX mess was a UNC conspiracy, and that no one will ask any further questions about the Lance Thomas Bling Fund.

Not true. Just look at Kentucky bball, Auburn and Cam Newton, pretty much every Alabama football team to ever take the field, John Wooden...the list goes on and on and on.
