Chapel Hill, N.C. — Kyle Datres and Cody Roberts hit two-run homers, Logan Warmoth finished with four hits (in four appearances) and J.B. Bukauskas won his sixth game of the year as No. 4 North Carolina scored a 7-2 victory over NC State in the series opener Friday evening at Boshamer Stadium.
The contest started as a pitcher’s duel, as neither team’s starting pitcher allowed a run through the first five innings.
Bukauskas threw 5.1 innings without allowing a hit, but Stephen Pitarra singled in the sixth to spark the Pack. NC State (19-16, 7-9 ACC) struck first in the contest on an RBI single to right center off the bat of Josh McLain, who scored PItarra, to take a 1-0 lead.
Carolina answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer by Kyle Datres to grab a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, UNC added runs on singles from Brian Miller and Warmoth. Miller crossed the plate for the third run of the inning as Ashton McGee grounded out to first base, giving the home team a 5-1 lead before the end of the inning.
A two-run homer in the eighth by UNC’s Cody Roberts added a few insurance runs for the Tar Heels. The Wolfpack loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth and tried to mount a rally, but was only able to get one run out of it.
Pitarra led NC State at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with a run scored, while Brad Debo was 2-for-3 with a run. Brett Kinneman and McLain had one hit apiece.
The Tar Heels have won 10 straight and now stand at 28-6 overall and 13-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
NC State and North Carolina will return to the field on Saturday afternoon for game two of the series at 4 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
