The $15 Blue Devils

Posted May 29, 2014

You may have seen the gang at pump out something so simple and so great that it nearly broke twitter this week. They asked NBA fans to choose the ultimate $15 team. Choosing from a list of the best players at each position, each assigned a dollar value between $1 and $5, you were asked to compile your squad for a total of $15.

Sounds easy, right?

For the record, I went with Walt Frazier ($1), Michael Jordan ($5), LeBron James ($5), Tim Duncan ($3) and Hakeem Olajuwon ($1). Why The Dream was ranked fifth in that group was a bit of a mystery to me, but beauty is in the eye, you know.

In any case, the idea was good enough to steal and bring it a bit closer to home, therefore over the next few days, we'll do the same with the local schools. Today, the $15 Duke Blue Devils.

Yes, there are going to be arguments over how the players are ranked and even to which positions they've been assigned. I'm not saying you're wrong in any case, but I will offer that Duke has always been positionless, so that portion of your beef will absolutely fall on deaf ears. The only rule is that one-and-done players are almost always excluded, with the only caveat being if they have been a part of a Final Four team.

With that said, here's the board, have fun.

Point Guards
Bobby Hurley $5
Jay Williams $4
Dick Groat $3
Tommy Amaker $2
William Avery $1

Shooting Guards
Johnny Dawkins $5
J.J. Redick $4
Jim Spanarkel $3
Jon Scheyer $2
Trajan Langdon $1

Small Forwards
Grant Hill $5
Art Heyman $4
Gene Banks $3
Mike Dunleavy $2
Kyle Singler $1

Power Forwards
Shane Battier $5
Danny Ferry $4
Mark Alarie $3
Luol Deng $2
Ryan Kelly $1

Christian Laettner $5
Mike Gminski $4
Elton Brand $3
Carlos Boozer $2
Shelden Williams $1

My team: Hurley ($5), Scheyer ($2), Banks ($3), Deng ($2) and Brand ($3)

Coming up tomorrow, the $15 N.C. State Wolfpack.

J Williams ($4) Reddick ($4) Battier ($5) Singler ($1) and S Williams ($1). Just to add a good discussion $5 team would be pretty good. Avery, Langdon, Singler, Kelly and Williams.

Jay Williams, Jon Scheyer, Grant Hill, Shane Battier and Carlos Boozer

Since Gold's list is severely flawed in his evaluations (seriously... Scheyer ahead of Langdon? Hell, Scheyer even on this list?, and Hurley ahead of Jay Williams?), and since 1 of the things that makes K great is his unconventional nature of not recognizing "set positions", but rather team chemistry, I'll deviate. Here's your unbeatable $15 Duke team: $4 Jason Williams at SG/PG, $5 Grant Hill at SF/SG/PG, $2 Mike Dunleavy at SF/SG, $2 Luol Deng at PF, and $2 Carlos Boozer at C.

    - Uh, I don't think you understand how this works. Burleson is undoubtedly NC State's $5 Center, just as Thompson is their $5 Small Forward. Yeah, I'd put both on my team, right off the bat if I could; but that would only leave $5 more to sign the rest. Not $7.

    Wolpack Team:

    Tom burleson $3
    David thompson $5
    Monte Towe $2
    TJ Warren $1
    Ronnie Shavlik $4

Williams, Scheyer, Heyman, Deng, Brand. This was harder than I thought. I'd want to use AG's math and get G-Man at center instead of Brand.

Meh, I'll take Art Heyman, Bob Verga, Randy Denton, Jack Marin, Tate Armstrong and pocket the 15 bucks.
