The $15 N.C. State Wolfpack

Posted May 30, 2014

David Thompson honored on Feb. 17, 2010 at N.C.State's home game against Maryland.

You may have seen the gang at Ballislife.com pump out something so simple and so great that it nearly broke Twitter this week. They asked NBA fans to choose the ultimate $15 team.

Choosing from a list of the best players at each position, each assigned a dollar value between $1 and $5, you were asked to compile your squad for a total of $15.

Sounds easy, right?

For the record, I went with Walt Frazier ($1), Michael Jordan ($5), LeBron James ($5), Tim Duncan ($3) and Hakeem Olajuwon ($1). Why The Dream was ranked fifth in that group was a bit of a mystery to me, but beauty is in the eye, you know.

In any case, the idea was good enough to steal and bring it a bit closer to home, and yesterday, we opened up with the $15 Duke Blue Devils. That was a bit easier to select as the overwhelming number of players came from the Coach K era.

Today's offering, the $15 N.C. State Wolfpack, was far more difficult, as historically speaking, the Pack have legendary players stretching back to the 40s! So, with some assistance from North Carolina State historian and author Tim Peeler, we present to you the player pool from which you can select your $15 dollar Wolfpack.

Will there be mild, even raised-voice discussions over player values? Certainly. What good list doesn't come with some level of debate. Will there be legitimate disagreements over the positions assigned to some players? Sure. You might not think that Chris Corchiani is a Center. OK, just kidding, but I'm sure there will be some difference of opinion in where players fall and that's okay.

Remember, this is supposed to be fun, so have some and let us know what you think. Without further adieu….the $15 Wolfpack.

PG
Sidney Lowe $5
Lou Pucillo $4
Chris Corchiani $3
Monte Towe $2
Nate McMillan $1

SG
Rodney Monroe $5
Dereck Whittenburg $4
Julius Hodge $3
Terry Gannon $2
Clyde Austin $1

SF
David Thompson $5
(Honestly, why even bother listing anyone else, since NO ONE ISN'T taking DT)
Hawkeye Whitney $4
Vann Williford $3
T.J. Warren $2
Ilian Evtimov $1 (Boy, I hope I spelled it correctly)

PF
Ronnie Shavlik $5
Kenny Carr $4
Tom Gugliotta $3
Lorenzo Charles $2
Chucky Brown $1

C
Tommy Burleson $5
Thurl Bailey $4
Charles Shackleford $3
Todd Fuller $2
Tracy Smith $1

For argument's sake, here's my five….Nate McMillan ($1), Terry Gannon ($2), David Thompson ($5), Lorenzo Charles ($2) and Tommy Burleson ($5).

Kinda a joke to put Thurl Bailey at the C position when he played the SF position for the '83 Title team with Cozelle playing the C spot & Lorenzo playing the PF spot. He also played SF in the NBA (not that that matters a whole lot here). Doesn't change the team I'd pick: Thompson, Burleson each at $5. McMillan @ $1, Gannon @ $2, & Lorenzo @ $2, which is a copy of Gold's $15 team & is his redeeming factor in light of the many errors he's put forth on these teams' valuations & even position recognitions.

    Nate McMillian $1
    Rodney Monroe $5
    Hawkeye Whitney $4
    Tom Gugliotta $3
    Todd Fuller $2

Hawkeye is under-rated and this would be a very good shooting lineup.

$15 N.C. State Wolfpack has an appropriate ring to it.

Give me the 2012-2013 dream team. Best preseason team ever.

Since I took DT, I couldn't take Monroe, too, and come up with a team I liked, but I loved watching Monroe as a kid.
