The Mitchell Report: A stack of money

Posted December 23, 2012

This will serve as my weekly column for notes about things I find interesting outside the Triangle. Enjoy my insights. I will enjoy sharing them ..

Give them flags

Let me first start out with what really had me fired up today. The officiating in the Panthers game was rather dreadful. I am not blaming this all on the officials because I know the league is trying to get them to enforce certain things, but a tackle is not "roughing the passer". Apparently Greg Hardy led with his head when he nailed Carson Palmer in the first quarter. It looked like a really good, really hard hit to me. He was flagged and the Raiders got a first down. Not five minutes later, Luke Kuechly was penalized for hitting a "defenseless receiver". Replay showed this was also a rather clean hit. I know the league is trying to cut down on concussions and it should, but there has to be a way for the defensive guys to play the game. Right now, any hit can be called a penalty. Palmer was hit hard because he held on to the football about 3 seconds too long. He should be punished for that. It's the NFL.

Greenberg gets a shot

Big congrats to former Tar Heel Adam Greenberg who signed a minor league deal with the Baltimore Orioles. The guy is 31 and he's still chasing the dream of playing Major League baseball. It's hard to imagine getting so close to your dream only to get beaned in the head on your first pitch. Anyone can root for a guy who refuses to give up even when he has very little chance of achieving the dream at this point.

Keselowski and Hendrick

We are starting to learn more about the NASCAR champion Brad Keselowski. I was surprised to watch an interview with him this week where he revealed talks with Hendrick Motorsports in 2008. He says he was all set to join the team, but the ride went to Mark Martin instead. The interview is rather awkward as Keselowski tries not to say anything bad about Rick Hendrick. You can tell it still hurts him. Things have worked out well for the driver of the #2 car. It's interesting to wonder if getting dumped by Hendrick fueled his desire.

NHL's Twitter problem

The NHL lockout is obviously horrible for the league and the players are not helping themselves with social media. The stupidest example came this week when Evander Kane of the Winnipeg Jets thought it was a good idea to tweet a picture of himself pretending to talk on the phone. The "phone" was actually a stack of money. BRAVO! said the NHLPA who is busy trying to convince owners you don't make too much money. Pro Hockey talk does a nice job of breaking down the NHL twitter issues here .

Agree! The great Deacon Jones said put a dress on them. It should be called the Manning/Brady rule. Because if you hit these guys you may have to go borrow some cash from Money Mayweather to pay the fines. I understand wanting to protect the players, but back in the day you just took those hits. Its football. I understand that the guys, are bigger, and stronger and faster these days. I get that, but know one is holding a gun to your head to make you play football. Im pretty sure the commish has never played a down of football. Taking out the kickoffs is something else thats carzy!

I agree about the Panthers/Raiders game yesterday. Thomas Davis even said, "They're trying to make us play like girls." And he's right. The refs were whistle happy yesterday, and especially in the 4th qtr, if a player sneezed, he got a flag. The NFL has turned into "Flag Football" - as in the refs throwing flags down right and left. Too much laundry on the field these days.

Sissies go hangout at mule day with the rest of the mules. This young lady is someones daughter.

The officials were overzealous in this one. Palmer was taken out on a clean and solid hit. Luke Kuechly is a hard-nosed player. Another bad call.

I feel sorry for the mules.

    Especially the mulettes.

Football is not what it used to be. Defenders get paid to go after QBs like a Steeler QB going after a Lake Tahoe casino host, only to get flagged after each hit. I just don't get it.

Everyone complained about the replacement refs, and everyone complains about the regular refs. Can we all just agree that the nfl as a whole is terrible, top to bottom?
