The Mitchell Report: Bad games, Pelini and Corso

Posted September 22, 2013

Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.

Enough

I've never been a fan of FBS (1A) teams playing FCS (1AA) teams. This weekend took that to a whole new level of stink. When you have teams agreeing to play a shorter fourth quarter (Miami and Savannah State) and teams willing to play with a running clock (FIU and Louisville) things have gone too far. I understand these games are big pay days for the smaller schools and they use those big pay days to pad the athletic revenue for the entire year, however these kinds of games are humiliating for the guys on the field. There are so many things to fix in college football and at some point we need to fix this. There are some really good FCS teams and they should get a chance to play with the big boys, but we need to figure out how a draw the line. Savannah State doesn't even consistently compete at its own level. Those kids don't need to be playing Miami.

Pelini's Rant

I actually felt pretty bad for Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini this week when audio of a rant surfaced two years after the fact. If you didn't hear about this, he basically said "blank" the fans on many occasions. It was obvious Pelini didn't know he was being recorded. He was simply venting before doing his post-game radio show. I am a big believer that every mic should be considered live and you shouldn't say anything in front of a mic that you wouldn't want the world to hear, but this was not on the record. This was at a time Pelini thought was private. I have been in moments with coaches after games that are off the record. There are things said. Those things stay in the room. It is sad to think someone not only recorded that in secret, but held it for two years and then released in in a time of weakness for the Husker program. I guess there is no safe place to vent anymore.

Quick Hits

- I am a big "College GameDay" fan and I try to watch it as much as possible. I am trying to figure out if Lee Corso is sad to watch or absolutely hilarious. We know he has suffered a stroke, so I understand the problem and I am sensitive to that. However, the guy just says whatever pops into his head. When talking about Pelini he said "he just keeps b-tching and b-tching"...He said this on national tv. Lee no longer has a filter. The all time great remains "aw...F it".

- I Just as I stopped calling it the "Busch Series", the name will soon change again. Nationwide will end its sponsorship of NASCAR's second level after the 2014 season. Any suggestions for a new sponsor?

The year that APP ST beat Michigan, Stanford beat USC as a 50 point underdog (or something like that), making the latter the bigger upset. I agree about the upper tier of FCS teams, they could beat a lot of the FBS teams.

Pre-game shows. LOL. No interest here either. The actual games are time-consuming enough. The NFL shows are unwatchable.

I'm not a big fan of FBS playing FCS teams, but the 1 time I WILL make an exception is the first gme of the year. Other than that - no thanks.

One big reason it happens is schools not honoring agreements to play other teams. We see that happen all the time, and it leaves them scrambling to find someone to play - usually that means an FCS team. What's is they still charge $40+ to attend one of those games. At least State gave their season ticket holders the option to buy that game.

Pelini goes off too much and doesn't keep his composure. He's done stuff like this several times in his career. It will get him bursted one day. Corso does a great job and he is really good for the game. He knows his football and seems to be a great researcher regarding teams, coaches, and players.

I don't think the kids from Savannah State were embarrassed. Awestruck, perhaps. They'll remember that game more than most of the FCS games they will play.

Let's also not lose sight of the fact that about 20 more schools have voluntarily moved up to the FBS in the past twenty or so years. Competitively speaking, they are still no better than the top FCS teams. FIU is an example of that. Granted, they have 22 more scholarships to give. But that just means they have another 22 players not good enough to play for the bigger schools.

Of all the things wrong with major college sports, this one is pretty far down on my list.

FIU is FBS, not FCS. Just for the record.

you can complain about FBS vs FCS all you want but remember App St. went to Mich and whooped their tails in the "big house". This year ND st. went to Kansas St. and beat them. I guarantee you that Montana or Montana St. would beat any football team in the state of NC.

All that said FCS wins should not count toward bowl elgibility.

Pelini..has foot in mouth disease and it's gonna get him fired

pre-game shows who watches them...I can read in 15 minutes what it takes them 2 hours to say without the commercials or other garbage
