The Mitchell Report: Bad games, Pelini and Corso
Posted September 22, 2013
Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.
I've never been a fan of FBS (1A) teams playing FCS (1AA) teams. This weekend took that to a whole new level of stink. When you have teams agreeing to play a shorter fourth quarter (Miami and Savannah State) and teams willing to play with a running clock (FIU and Louisville) things have gone too far. I understand these games are big pay days for the smaller schools and they use those big pay days to pad the athletic revenue for the entire year, however these kinds of games are humiliating for the guys on the field. There are so many things to fix in college football and at some point we need to fix this. There are some really good FCS teams and they should get a chance to play with the big boys, but we need to figure out how a draw the line. Savannah State doesn't even consistently compete at its own level. Those kids don't need to be playing Miami.
I actually felt pretty bad for Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini this week when audio of a rant surfaced two years after the fact. If you didn't hear about this, he basically said "blank" the fans on many occasions. It was obvious Pelini didn't know he was being recorded. He was simply venting before doing his post-game radio show. I am a big believer that every mic should be considered live and you shouldn't say anything in front of a mic that you wouldn't want the world to hear, but this was not on the record. This was at a time Pelini thought was private. I have been in moments with coaches after games that are off the record. There are things said. Those things stay in the room. It is sad to think someone not only recorded that in secret, but held it for two years and then released in in a time of weakness for the Husker program. I guess there is no safe place to vent anymore.
- I am a big "College GameDay" fan and I try to watch it as much as possible. I am trying to figure out if Lee Corso is sad to watch or absolutely hilarious. We know he has suffered a stroke, so I understand the problem and I am sensitive to that. However, the guy just says whatever pops into his head. When talking about Pelini he said "he just keeps b-tching and b-tching"...He said this on national tv. Lee no longer has a filter. The all time great remains "aw...F it".
- I Just as I stopped calling it the "Busch Series", the name will soon change again. Nationwide will end its sponsorship of NASCAR's second level after the 2014 season. Any suggestions for a new sponsor?
