The Mitchell Report: Big East Expletives and Cat Latos

Posted October 21, 2012

This will serve as my weekly column for notes about things I find interesting outside the Triangle. Enjoy my insights. I will enjoy sharing them ...

Bowden cards an ace

Bobby Bowden isn't coaching anymore, but apparently the guy still has some game. Bowden recorded a hole-in-one during a round of golf in Mobile this week. "After 50 years, I finally got a hole-in one," he said while talking to the Alabama media about a variety of topics. He also addressed paying college football players saying he's for it and the guys should get about $100 a month. Bowden is getting ready to turn 83, but I never really considered him to be "stuck in his ways". He grew with the times and understood his players even until his retirement a couple of years back. He's also completely ok with a playoff system in college football. I hope he continues to be a part of college football moving forward, and good for him for finally achieving an ace!

Nike courts Rory

Rory McIlroy could be the latest superstar to join the Nike team. The Irish Times is reporting the golfer is close to signing a deal with Nike worth $250 Million over 10 years. Wow! His current equipment deal is Titleist and that expires at the year and Rory is considered to be the biggest free agent on the market. It is not surprising to see Nike going after him, especially after they dropped Lance Armstrong this week.

Tebow patents "Tebowing"

Tim Tebow now owns the rights to "Tebowing". That's the pose the Jets quarterback makes while he is praying. It became the popular thing to do last season while Tebow was playing for the Broncos. Now that he doesn't play that much, we don't get to see him Tebow as much. He chose to patent the move because he "wants to control how it's used". He says he doesn't want it to be used in the wrong way and he doesn't plan to profit from the patent.

a Cat named Latos

In keeping with my theme of getting an animal story into this column whenever possible, I bring you the story of "Cat Latos". All credit to Deadspin for this scoop. As Deadspin first reported, Reds pitcher Mat Latos recently bought a cat. The cat's name? Cat Latos. Get it? I laughed. Perhaps you don't share my sense of humor, but many people around this country do. The feline is now so popular, he's got a twitter account @catlatos.

Expletives in the Big East

Here's a story with a bit more meat for you. Rick Pitino and Jim Boeheim got into it a bit at Big East basketball media day last week. It started when Pitino made a comment that Memphis and Temple joining the league would "more than make up for" the departure of Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame to the ACC. Boeheim responded saying, "Rick's full of (blank) if that's really what he said." Well that's awesome. I can't wait to see those two teams play this year.

Next Week

There will not be a Mitchell Report next week as I will be off running my first marathon. Yes, I will voluntarily run 26.2 miles next Sunday in Washington D.C. Hopefully I will make it to the finish line and be back for the following week. Enjoy your week off!

Good Luck Mandy, we'll all be pulling for you to finish

Good luck in the marathon, Mandy. The Marine Corp is tough, but you'll ace it.

Boeheim is a crusty old guy - I like the way he tells it like he sees it without sugar coating.

Mandy I didn't read about the Marathon the first time. Wishing you the very best in this 26.2 in DC. You will kick it!!!

Solid topics Mandy. Bobby Bowden is one of the best. I met him in Pinehurst three years ago. He's just a down to earth person, and will talk about anything. Happy for his hole-in-one. People still listen to him when it comes to changes in football.

Rory and Nike. WOW City. He will jump on this serious money. Good for him. He and Phil, Bubba, Simpson, D. Johnson, Z. Johnson, JB Holmes, and a few others are some of my favorites.

Tebow is one of the good guys. I just wish that he was playing more. Maybe he can hook up with another team one day and get some playing time.

I liked the heat between Pitino and Boeheim. When it was announced that Cuse would be coming to the ACC. Boeheim stated "where is the h--- is Greensboro, NC?"

Enjoy The Marine Corps Marathon. My wife ran it last year and a few years before than. Grats historical sights along your route.
