The Mitchell Report: Bilas, Rivera and a roasted Turtle

Posted December 22, 2013

Interview: Ron Rivera

Thoughts on the sports world I can't share in a 5 minute sportscast. Some Triangle news. Some not.

Bilas Speaks out

It is no surprise to see Jay Bilas defending the student athlete in the PJ Hairtson situation. Bilas is on a crusade to show the hypocrisy of the NCAA. The former Duke player had this to say on twitter:

Do you agree?

Riverboat Ron

I remember hearing all of the rumblings about firing Ron Rivera and thinking "I hope they keep him. He's such a likeable guy." I wasn't using my football sense at the time, just my human sense which likes the man. I am thrilled to see him doing so well now. The Panthers are relevant again and we haven't had a chance to say that since Jake Delhomme was in Charlotte. Rivera proved he wasn't too stubborn to make adjustments in his coaching style and now his team is headed to the playoffs. Not too many guys would have had the guts to change.

Roasted Turtle?

That doesn't sound like a very good idea for Christmas dinner. I was distraught when I found out the statue of Maryland's Testudo was on fire earlier this week. As the tradition goes, students leave things at the statue during exams. Apparently something caught fire setting the poor turtle ablaze. Thankfully, he was not seriously injured.

 Quick Hits

-If you are watching the NBA on Christmas day you will notice a bunch of teams wearing the new jerseys with sleeves. LeBron James is one of the many players against this saying he doesn't want the sleeves to bother the shooters on the team. Guys are used to wearing regular basketball jerseys. Not sure why the sleeves are being pushed so hard.

- Impressive start for Wes Moore at NC State. He's got the Pack at 11-1 after beating a very good ranked LSU team this week. Very curious to see how this team stacks up come ACC play.

-LA Kings Goalie Martin Jones has won the first 8 games of his career. The rookie is one of only two goalies to start his career 8-0.

Worth Reading

I feel like all of the stories I post here are worth your time, but I especially like these two.

Tom Izzo pays tribute to a long time referee during the final minutes of a game.

A wonderful gesture by the Southern Miss football coach for his graduating seniors.

Toddler - You really think LeBron couldn't keep up with the greats from the 70's 80's and 90's? There's an ongoing discussion of LeBron vs MJ. I'm dating myself, but I used to watch the Nets when they were in the ABA - Rick Barry days.

I think LeBron was complaining about wearing long sleeves. I can see where that wouldn't be comfortable. But to me, I don't know how they wear those baggy shorts either. As for bee-atching about playing on Christmas, he needs to get over it. I used to work holidays as well - just had to accept it and be glad I had a job.

Very good points HopingForABetterWorld. I don't know what went on behind the scenes with Hairston, but I think if Roy and Carolina thought he had a shot at playing, they would have supported him and petitioned the NCAA. You're right about his T-shirts. If he's not allowed to play, they shouldn't be allowed to make money off his T-shirts.

I don't know about paying student/athletes, but I think they should definitely make money off of items like T-shirts sold with their name/number.

I have got to stop typing comments using an iPad... that keyboard does not work well with my fingers!

In my last comment: "You are an employer..." - should be "You are an employee..."

And; "What he got out of the grab back..." - should be "What he got out of the grab bag..."

And: ""MLB is has..." - should be "MLB has..." Also, "...a significant portion were..." - were should be "wear".

Sorry 'bout all that! I need to go back to using my laptop... not the iPad!

I've worked many a holiday in my life... not so much now, but at one time I had no choice - I really, and I mean really, needed the money. You do what you have to do... and those multimillionaire players don't "need to". Nevertheless, I strongly suspect the "whining" players want the day "off with pay". I'd put this proposal in front of them. You are employer of this enterprise which happens to be a professional basketball team in the NBA. Playing on Christmas Day is a long-time custom. But... here's what we will do. We will determine the cost to the enterprise of NOT playing this holiday. All of you have different roles on this team and therefore different salaries. We will determine the cost of not playing the game and determine what each player's part of that is proportionate to each player's salary. If each player is willing to have his proportionate cost deducted from his next paycheck...we will cancel the game. Wonder how many would take that deal?

With regard to complaints about the jerseys: An NBA game sometimes looks like each player dressed with what he got out the "grab back" at the local thrift shop... with all the elastic "sleeves" - short one and long ones and of different colors - and the different "leggings - long and short, different colors . Add to that... some wear headbands, some don't... and of course... all the different shoes! The teams often look like "rag-tag" street teams far more than a "professional" team. The NFL seems to have the most "uniform" uniform policy... MLB is has a "semi-restrictive" policy... I personally don't think it looks "professionally uniform" when a significant portion were the "knee-high" socks and the others wear the long pants - no socks showing. But otherwise MLB uniforms are... well, "uniform". The NBA... with all that other stuff I mentioned above... looks absolutely "sloppy" and "UN"-uniform. I "LOVE" basketball, but NOT the NBA version of it!!!

Bilas loves being a gadfly to the NCAA. He has an opinion just like everyone else, nothing more. I'm not up on my NBA news, but whining about jerseys seems pretty trite. I've worked many a holiday in my life also. So it goes.

Laker fan my entire life. I seldom watch them because of the decisions of Buss junior, and Kupchack. Sure do miss Jerry West. Only a hand few today could play back in the 70's 80's, and 90's. This Heat team complains all the time. Lebron, and Wade are the biggest crybabys in the NBA. Hope the Pacers can take them out. Crying about a uniform, and playing on Xmas. Give me a break.

Toddler-- you named the GREAT ones! Those were BASKETBALL PLAYERS, and they played the game I know as BASKETBALL! Players of their caliber are mostly now extinct... Likewise for the game of basketball in the NBA. I virtually never watch the NBA today.

  • Toddler10-21 Dec 23, 1:02 p.m.

Hammer you have to realize around here that if someone from Duke says, or does something they are always going to be right becauce Bilas went to Duke. The Duke fan that posted was defending Bilas not PJ. If Bilas would have said the opposite then he would have agreed with Bilas again. Ok Lebron, and the Heat. First you complain about jerseys. Now you complain about having to travel, and play on Xmas. Guess what I have to work also. Wade just fake a injury so you can stay home. Never heard MJ, Magic, Bird, Kobe, Mchale, Jabbar etc complain about it. You know why? Because they looked forward to it. As for the jerseys, I think they would look nice with a pair of Wade's capri's. People wonder why so many dislike this team.

Who would want to buy Hairston's jersey or whatever at this point?

  • HopingForABetterWorld Dec 23, 10:32 a.m.

Jgunn, I don't see his tweets as supporting Hairston, but supporting his right to at least be heard and defend himself...and at the same time, the school and NCAA NOT making more money off him if they won't allow him to play or be heard. I think he's actually got a point here. No matter how guilty PJ appears, he does at least deserve the process of being heard and "judged" and certainly if they remove him, they should remove his money-making items from their stores.
