The Mitchell Report: MJ and Danica's love life

Posted February 17, 2013

This will serve as my weekly column for notes about things I find interesting outside the Triangle. Enjoy my insights. I will enjoy sharing them ..

MJ Turns 50

Kendall Marshall sent out a tweet today saying he was too young to remember Michael Jordan. Think about that. He's a rookie in the NBA and he is too young. That means the guys on the UNC roster are way too young. High school kids, even worse. This is the first time in my life where I am glad I am older. I got a chance to watch MJ play the Miami Heat three different times when I was a kid. My uncle had season tickets and I always called the Bulls game. I knew, even as a youngster, that I was watching something special. I am not big on comparing guys from different eras. I really love watching Lebron and Kobe, but there is always a soft spot in any sports fan's heart for the guy they watched as a kid. Jordan is that guy for me. I remember a middle school project where we were asked to write a letter to our hero. 80 percent of the class wrote to MJ, me included. We all wanted to wear number 23 on the rec team. Rooting for the Bulls was a given, even in my hometown in South Florida. It's been awesome watching the tributes to Jordan as he turns 50. It's fun to see the plays that got me interested in basketball in the first place. The funny thing is, I didn't learn he was a Tar Heel until later in my life. I was much too young to have had the chance to watch him at UNC. If you got to see that, feel lucky!

Danica's Boyfriend

The NASCAR season hasn't even officially started and I am already really tired of hearing about Danica Patrick's love life. She is dating fellow driver Rickey Stenhouse Jr. During qualifying, they showed a split-screen of Stenhouse and Danica's car. This was going on while she was making history by becoming the first woman to ever win a Sprint Cup Pole. Danica is a grown woman and can obviously date who she wants, but I don't think this is very smart. What if she wrecks? What if she is forced to pass him for a win? How can this not be awkward? It seems like it would have been a professional decision to avoid any kind of romantic relationship with someone in the sport. I understand these people spend lots of time together, but it's going to cause problems. I can't wait for the time when we learn they've had a fight and we see her retaliate by sending him into the wall in Darlington.

The NASCAR dryer

You've probably heard NASCAR is debuting a new car next week at the Daytona 500. The "GEN 6" is what they are calling it. It is supposedly going to make racing a lot better this season. I am looking forward to another debut. The sport is finally getting a better track dryer. I've always wondered how a sport with so much technology didn't have a machine that could dry a racetrack faster. Now NASCAR has the "Air Titan" which they say can dry the track 80 percent faster. This will cut down on delays from a small rain shower. It's about time.

Sir Charles' Belly Button

I really didn't think I would ever hear a discussion about Charles Barkley's belly button on TV. That's what happened this week. In case you missed it,  here is the story. Charles maintains he kept Vaseline in his belly button in case he had chapped lips. That is really not making the story better for me. I had a poster of Sir Charles on my wall. He falls in the same category as MJ as far as guys I watched growing up. Now I keep wondering if he had the Vaseline the day they took the photo for that poster. Gross!

Ha ha ha - good one! I didn't think of that, but you're right about the headline.

I enjoyed seeing the MJ highlight reels playing on ESPN - his 50 best dunks, etc. MJ will always be an iconic figure IMHO. Sure, LeBron and Kobe have left their marks on the NBA, they're great players, but MJ is in a class all by himself.

Independent, original thought is not allowed in the sports talk world. I think it's always been this way. I saw NY's Russo (I think that's his name) on Cup of Joe one morning to talk about the NFL playoffs. I think he saw it as a chance to show off his sports knowledge, and every one on the panel, including the women, made his points for him before he could. He was clearly frustrated, and I was amused. Point being, everyone who followed football had already heard all of the angles that Russo was going to regurgitate, and actually made them more eloquently.

I almost thought the headline was implying that MJ and Danica were dating or something.

Great one regarding MJ. He's still the best that ever laced up a pair IMO. LeBron is coming on strong. Charles Barkley...that was out there.

I am sick that no one cares Danica was dating Ricky while she was still married. Why doesn't anyone talk about that... oh, that's right, no morals in America anymore.

Because this is what the media does, rehash terrible, annoying stories that will get more attention. Glad to know that WRAL is not above this stuff...
